Re: Motoport gear.

To think I have lived 15 miles away from this place for the past 2yrs and didn't know it (I'm a Bay Area transplant). I'm shocked as I'm a bit of a gear nut and also very grateful as it's just been put on the list of places to visit this weekend. I've already got an order in for an NJK custom 2 piece leather set, but this Motoport gear might be just the ticket for the commute!

Thank you very much for the writeup!

Regards,
Jack

I have a fitting appointment on Friday. I'm trying to decide between the Ultra II Air Mesh and the Riva Air Mesh jackets. Also, I think hi-viz is a smart idea, but I'm not sure I like the look. Anyone have any experience with the hi-viz? Seems like most are opting for the Ultra II jacket. I have a lot to decide in the next few days. :scratch

Your decisions will be easier when you get there and see the fabrics and colors in person.

I really like the Ultra Mesh that I have. I like the longer length jacket also. Mine is black, and in three years of riding year round no matter how hot, I have not regretted the color choice. I think it looks the best IMO. The other colors seem to fade after awhile, and I don't like the look of the black pockets on the lighter colored jackets. the two tone look just doesn't look good to me. The refective stripes are very high vis, and keep the classy look of the gear. the rain liner is good, the quilted liner is not. You can get a heated vest or jacket for less money and be happier and warmer. I just got my pants back from them. I had then add a strap at the bottom of the leg. The NEW kevlar is the same shade as my three year old kevlar. No fading at all. I have seen some of the colored gear, and it just doesn't look as good after awhile IMO. And the fabric samples will not do justice to just HOW MUCH YELLOW is on the jacket. check the pics on the website. Sheesh!

When you're sitting in traffic in a car, pay attention to passing motorcycles, and when they stop being noticable. Black jackets and multi-colored helmets fade into the background at a surprisingly close distance. But a yellow jacket and solid (or mostly solid) yellow or white helmet standout from their surroundings at several times the distance a dark jacket/helmet. I was really surpised at the difference a busy pattern on a helmet makes - even when it's bright colors - my retina-searing metallic-red and yellow helmet isn't nearly as noticable at a distance as my white and yellow and black helmet (the back of the helmet is mostly white)-

That said, if you don't want to walk around looking like an English traffic cop, you can always wear a hi-viz vest while riding, and then take it off when you're posing off-bike :p

Re: Motoport gear.

Yeah, I agree with the vest. It mutes the cooling of the mesh, but that's not always going to be a factor. Walking around looking like Big Bird or The Great Pumpkin you might get tired of, what with all the autographs and little kids and all.
I have hi vis reflectives on the saddlebags of my bike to help stand out. Even in daylight, they light up pretty well with more vehicles having daytime running lights. And I have reflectives on my jacket and pants as well. At a certain point, you have to consider how you look as well as how well you're seen.

All good points, everyone. I'll look at all the colors and fabrics, but I am leaning toward basic black. Hi-viz vest is a great option.

I ended up with the black and bought a vest to slip over in the city. The yellow green is nice but I just could not do it. Dom's just looked to sharp!:D
