Re: Motoport gear.
Wheew Dom, glad to read your post as it means you are not hurt too bad to type...great news! When you get up to it, could you post some after action gear pics?
Y'all can stop testing the gear now, it works. |
Re: Motoport gear.
Dom, thanks for the report on cycleport gear. Was wonderful to hear that you survived nicely after this frightening experience. There is alot of physics involved with a bike slipping out from under you...You can see why your shoulder got hurt...dropping from maybe 5 feet or more off of the pavement at 40 miles an hour and estimate your weight and the bike basically slamming you down...I am not sure any armour could absorb all of that energy....but my new gear should arrive any day and it has the upgraded armour so I will keep my fingers crossed that good fortune graces my days. I also went on to read your redlegs column. I have had some experiences living in the mountains of Lake Tahoe and Mammoth for 10 years that scared the poo out of me. Ice can make for a very bad day...I remember going down a short hill at 2 mph in my Izuzu with 4 by in gear. I knew it was slicker than slick and even with all of these precautions the ass end still broke loose...even without touching a brake or a gas pedal...even the steering wasn't changed even a fraction of an inch in direction and it broke loose...go figure...
glad you are okay and hope your healing takes place at hayabusa speed...2hip |
Re: Motoport gear.
Dom sorry to hear about your accident as well. I went to Motoport today and spent several hours talking with Wayne. He sized my wife and I being very anxious was able to find an off the rack jacket and pants that seems to fit just fine. I guess there is so much Motoport around the world that riders wearing them go down daily and the protection is consistent. Hope you will be back to 100% soon. Sounds like some good Samaritans in Co. !

re pics of the damage to the cycleport gear....the kevlar material was lightly scuffed up, I can't get it to show on the pictures even with flash on...the reflective strip came loose in the middle of the forearm area, that's it. good gear! |
Re: Motoport gear.
Dom, thanks for testing the gear. I wish you had asked me first. I was willing to take Wayne's word for it!! Ice in June! I'm glad you're ok. Welcome to the club. I-70. Holy Cow! You're lucky you weren't hit by something really big out there. I've been thinking about upgrading my armor also. Maybe if I have some insurance money left over after fixing my bike. I'm not sure the new stuff would have helped you much. That had to be a pretty hard impact. Maybe.

Dom, good to see you are reasonably ok (considering) and able to share the experience with us. Hope you get well soon and the bike too. :2thumbsup

Re: Motoport gear.
Heh Guys and Gals, don't you just hate it when you are all dressed up and there is nowhere to go. Excuse me for my excitement...but I just got my new Ultra II Air Mesh Kevlar Jacket. It is more than I expected...and how often does the hype of a product disappoint??? This jacket fits me perfectly, armoured up the yang, pockets galore that are big and the material looks to be bulletproof. I called Wayne at Cycleport/Motoport and thanked him profusely for making such fantastic garments. I think all of our hides are worth the extra money put out on such products. Call Wayne at 800-777-6499..
In the literature it states that the best grade competition leather will tear at 80-110 pounds of force...Which is quite good compared to really good Cordura like 500 denier which will tear at 22 pounds of force (which means your hide is now on the pavement grinding away)...but get this point...and it is exactly the point Wayne deadpans in his monotone...Air Mesh Kevlar doesn't tear until 1260 pounds of force...the math is pretty basic...roughly that Air Mesh Kevlar is over 11-15 times more tear resistant than your best competition leather...and over 57 times more tear resistant than your typical jackets like Icon, Joe Rocket, etc that have 500 denier Cordura. Man, some of those jackets you see in Cycle Gear and motorcycle dealerships are very nice looking and styling is way cool...but I totally understand why the Ultra II Air Mesh kevlar jacket is designed the way it is...because function dictates the design necessary to protect our sorry hides in a wreck. Now if I could just get my new hayabusa out of the modification shop to try out my new gear!!! Cycleport gear is not cheap. But I can tell you after working in hospitals for over 30 years and seeing what happens to people who slide along pavement the investment in your hide is worth it. Not only are road rashes painfull as hell...they are difficult to treat due to deep tissue damage, post wreck infections, debreadment (removing the non-living tissue surgically), and the distinct possibility of the skin disappearing and now you are down to muscle...yikes!!! So, once I had my hands on the Kevlar jacket and felt the weight, looked at the brawny stitching and heavy zippers, the perforated Quad armour padding...you can see that Wayne has alot of money of his own invested in each article of clothing...I can only say that I have never seen a garment like this in my life..it is out of this world quality and I do not believe that there is a manufacturer out there who comes even close to it...'on my mother's eyes'...pony up, and get your Kevlar from Motoport before you even think about how to make our already supersonic bike even faster (and deadlier)...you never know when the fickle finger of fate will point your way...the jacket is beautiful thing...respectfully, 2hip |
Re: Motoport gear.
I sent my pants today for the stripe repair, and sent in my armor also for the quad upgrade. Hopefully I'll never need to find out if it was worth it or not. I do have a little extra insurance money, so this is a good way to spend it. I was thinking of a Power Commander, but chose safety over fuel management. Supposed to be even more absorbent and protective. By a lot. I've come this far...
