    Alaska Trip 2007

Hi Guys, my first post so bear with me. Rode my KLR from Bismarck, ND up to AK. Did the Top of the World, The Dalton (to Deadhorse) and the Cassiar. Lots of rain, wildlife and interesting people. Put 7800 miles on in 14 days and loved it all. Tented 10 days , motels for 3 nites due to rain. No major breakdowns, just minor maintenance. I'l do the Dumpster next year and maybe the road to Yellowknife. Will be much easier afer this years shakedown ride. If anyone has any questions, I'll help out with any info. Ride There!

I would love to ride to Alaska, from Vancouver. I need "tarmac" all the way b/c the Bird does not do gravel or anything unpaved. Can one ride to Fairbanks all on pavement? Moteling all the way, no carring gas?? I haven't found any pics here on Alaska. Can you recommend a web site? What month did you go, can you post a map of your route? Thanks.

Hi Arle. I got back about 3 weeks ago from my trip. Yes, you can ride to FB from Vancouver on pavement. You shouldn't need gas if you can get 150 miles or so on a tank. For maps I had a Milepost 2007 but you can learn all you need by googling AK Motorcycle Trips and reading up on it. Google Map or Google Earth is good for mapping. June or July are good months to go. Mid Aug you start seeing frost in the morn up North. Take good rain gear but you probably have that living where you live. There is a lot of luck involved with a trip up North. BC had a lot of rain just as I arrived. The Cassiar was closed for over a week due to mudslides. It opened for 3 hours the day I got to the junction and I barely squeeked thru, they locked it up behind me. It rained all the way to Stewart/Hyder that day. 400 miles of medium to heavy rain. My kilimanjaro coat and First Gear pants handled it great. Bone dry. Gloves got wet but that was my fault, didn't get the covers on in time. So it was bad luck to hit that weather but good luck to be able to do the Cassiar at all. Just be prepared for the worst. Gas when you can because a lot of stations were closed up when you were counting on them to be open. I'm not a computer type person, no idea how to post my route. I ran from Bismark to Edmonton the first day, over 800 mi and a dumb thing to do but I was pumped. Paid for it the next day. Took the Klondike to Dawson City, did top of the world to Chicken and stayed in Tok that nite. Ran to Fairbanks, had knobs put on, ran to Coldfoot, relaxed for a while, rode to Deadhorse and then to Yukon Crossing. Rode to Valdes, caught a ton of pink salmon, then on to the Cassiar and Hyder. From Hyder down to Glacier Park and home to ND. Let me know if you need more road info or something. Have a good day.

    Arle,

This thread may hold some information for you. At the very least, Mark/Helmetdance has posted some amazing photos of his Alaska ride on his Wing.

Here's a link to my current favorite Alaska ride story. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...highlight=hoon
It is being done on a BMW F650GS but you will find lots of interesting info.
