    Looking for a little more horsepower from my stock VFR

    I have had my VFR since July and I love it. It's comfortable enough, agile, handsome, provides great wind protection. However, I am find from time to time that I would like a little more speed from it. There is a bit of a dead spot in the power band around 5k and anything on the low end is a little gluggy.
    This is a common theme on some of the vfr boards where many wish the vfr was a liter bike instead of an 800. My two previous vfr's had significantly faster top speeds and had a roar that I miss.
    I have considered a power commander or an after market exhaust. Any ideas?

    When's the last time the bike had a full tune-up, and how comfortable are you with tools?...there are a lot of relatively easy things that can be done to make things better, if you don't mind a bit of serious spelunking below the valve covers.

    A Power Commander with proper setup on the dyno would be better than a non-stock exhaust.

    I would recommend a suspension makeover before you do anything else. I always say that the dollar for dollar the best upgrade you can make to a bike is quality suspension. Properly setup for your weight and riding style, it will transform your bike's handling, control, and comfort.

    I've had both my VFR and Griso upgraded by Jim Lindemann who is among the best at his craft. I'd recommend a front revalve and respring, and a Penske 8983 shock in back. I've had it done to my VFR about 7 years ago and I consider it the gold standard. It is not only compliant and plush feeling on bumps, but it is also firm and very controlled in the twisties. My cornering speed increased significantly due to the added stability and control. I'm not saying you won't benefit from more hp, but on the other hand, hp is nothing without control. My

    with my cruiser, changing from stock paper to a foam (uni or K&N) made a noticable difference, as did rejetting to match the after market pipes the previos owner put on.

    Peter I've done all the basic mods to my VFR, Power Commander, K&N air filter and after market exhaust. The the best mod for me seemed to be the Power Commander no really for power but to smooth out what I thought was a twichy throttle.

    Just remeber Peter your on a bike that has a wet wieght that is more than a Hayabusa, with 500 less CC's and unknown less horsepower. The other thing is that the VFR V4 is motor will pull well at the lower RPM's but does perfer to run at the 6,000 + range. which is where I try to keep mine.

    The above recommendations in priority order:
    1) Keep it on the boil - above 8 grand, that way all the valves are open
    2) Suspension upgrade - will do more to make it possible to ride fast than the other recommendations
    3) Power Commander - just don't expect to find a TON of additional power

    You may find that an advanced riding school is the best investment you can make in getting your bike to go faster.
