    Spark Arrestors on dual Sport

    Is it actually legal to ride a Triumph Scrambler off road in California ? It doesnt have a USFS spark arrestor so I presume that means no forest roads or fire roads.

    If this is the bike you're talking about-



    The stock muffler will be enough. By default, OEM street systems function as spark arrestors.

    Don't get carried away...just because it's called a "Scrambler" doesn't mean it'll be any fun when things get really interesting. Anything gnarlier than a dry dirt road will have a high pucker-factor, or worse.

    So an aftermarket exhaust system like an Arrow would be illegal then ?

    Dunno...you'll have to contact the manufacturer about that to be sure.

    I'd worry more about not hurting your bod or your bike...wrong tires, wrong gearing, and way too heavy for anything dirt-wise beyond really easy stuff. Decent dirt/NF/BLM roads would be OK, but any riding areas that need spark-arrestor enforcement will be way too much fun on your bike.

    That exposed oil line at the right front of the engine is scary: hitting the deck on that side will be problematical. If dirt-ride you must, carry a spare, whatever other bits are needed for a trail-side R&R, and some oil.

    If you are going to be off road in Ca, you will need a USFS stamped spark arrester. The ticket for not having one is expensive.

    +1, in my neck of the woods, no spark arrester = $2,500 + your bike in the back of the Wood Cop's truck and a long walk home.

    Thanks for the advice everyone. I certainly dont want to be starting any forest fires regardless of the legality.

    There are some people doing pretty impressive offroad aventures on the Scrambler over on advrider and I really like Triumphs. I have ridden the Scrambler and found it to be great fun on bumpy backroads (it really needs a pipe though). 4 year warranty on new Triumphs too.

    I have had Kawasaki KLR650 and Suzuki DRZ400 in the past but for me getting them serviced was a pain as there are no nearby dealers. I had lots of niggling problems with both the KLR650 and the DRZ400 and the dealers were awful to deal with.

    Still thinking of getting a DS of some sort in the future.

    ...they won't make you walk if it's a really long way, that could constitute Reckless Endangerment and Careless Disregard, both Felonies

    ...which is not to say they are giving you a ride home either

    you can buy generic spark arresters for bikes. at least you used to be able to.
    It's the journey, not the destination.
