A Pashnit Epic Adventure - Riding Northern California

The lower temps were a welcome change and it was in the 60's near the top. I finally lay against the snow to cool down. Ah, that did the trick.

    Finally getting cool!!

We stayed up here for awhile, enjoying the winter wonderland. Jeff headed off to take some photos and I told Haroldo the story of Pashnit.com (he'd never heard of it), a long-winded one that it is! Next to us, a group of Japanese tourists (really!!) chattered away, but other than that, it was completely silent. No city noise up here!

Surrounded by snow and mountain tops. Just how I'd like to spend my vacation.

Or... Maybe you like this photo... It's all about position & the angle. Every bike has a sweet spot when it comes to the camera lens.

Btw, here's Jeff's version of the same photo. Always interesting how the scene doesn't change, only the photographer, but yet you get such a different feel to the photo!

Jeff took this. Over he went gallivanting across snow drifts to capture that one elusive shot. Not too shabby. Really like the reflection of the mountain top on the water too.

Ah, snow. You still remember that it's the middle of Summer, right?

A Day in the NorCal Motorcycle Paradise

The next day, it was time to leave the winter wonderland behind & begin descending into the Central Valley. Interstate 5 (which runs along the entire West Coast) is in that valley in the distance.

Btw, if you need a volcanic destination out in the boonies- try Lava Beds National Monument way up in the northeast corner of California. Cool place. Lava everywhere. Oh, and don't forget a real live honest to goodness mountain of obsidian called Glass Mountain.

Really, an entire mountain of the stuff!!

A quick shot of the rock that lies beneath this region. All volcanic.

    Obligatory bike shot

If you've never heard of Highway 36, you haven't hung around that pashnit guy very much.

Imagine if you will a stretch of road 140 miles long and a plethora of curves that stretch off so far, they only come to an end because you've reached the edge of the continent - the Pacific Ocean.

    And oh the variety!!

    Highway 36

See, there is no one type of curve, road, pavement, terrain, elevation on this road. It has it all. Starting out from Red Bluff, the ride flows up down and all around, rocking left then right popping over hills and swooping into gullies.

And 'popping' is probably the opportune word. If you aren't careful, or are moving along too briskly, you'll be popping into the on-coming lane, so a bit of restraint is in order if this is your first time on this famous road.

Past the swoopy part, then up and over the first range. It occurred to me that the section after the first 20 miles of pop-up hills and swoopy curves, came now in a series of assaults. Into the twists, then straight for a short time to catch your breath. Back into the twists now, ready? Left, right, left! Ah, that's better. Then a breather again. A bit of that, then the mountain range looms before you. Time to head up into the mountains now!!

Do you ever have one of those Yee-Haw moments like the one above? You know the kind, a blast of curve city comes hurtling at you and slaps you upside the face.

    It goes something like this.

Lil straight for a bit, here comes the next set. Ready? Right, left, right! Even better!

Like that shot above? Here's another version!
