Google maps transfer onto Garmin 750?

    Hello out there!

I have a Garmin Nuvi 750 that did not come with any software. I want to be able to build routes in Google Maps and transfer them to the GPS. Is there a way to do that without having to buy Street Maps software from Garmin?

If I need to bu the software, can anyone suggest a reasonable source beside Garmin direct?

    Thankx, ic

Re: Google maps transfer onto Garmin 750?

I prefer to use Google Maps to create a route, rather than Mapsource. Google maps gives me a better impression of what the roads are going to be like, and I find Street View real help in visualizing the route.

You can only transfer the route, so you must have the maps on your Garmin.

When you create a route, the route must only have points to create the route, do not insert o type points. Once transferred to the Garmin, small errors in the mapping may cause some errors, so you will need to check the final route on the garmin.

    The steps are :-

    1. install this into your browser. This will enable a route to be converted to a GPX file. I use Linux/Firefox, but it appears to work in Windows/IE.

    2. Use gpsbable to transfer the gpx file to the Garmin.

Note, gpsbabel can also get the tracks off the Garmin, so that they can be viewed in Google Earth, or Google maps.

I created this route in google maps, and it's now in my Garmin.

It's not simple and PC skills are required. So a copy of Mapsource may be the simplest solution.

I'll try to help if you want to follow this route.

    Steve,

Thankx for the tips & tricks. I am pretty busy right now getting ready to go on a weeks vacation to the Caribbean. When I get back, I'll load up the old desk top and give it try.
