    23S16, Johnsondale to Glenville

    Greetings!

I’ve wanted to revisit this old road since reading
a couple of ride reports here. The last time I traversed
this road was back in the mid 70’s when my high school
hunting buddy and I would go deer hunting up Black
Mounting saddle near Greenhorn summit and Johnsondale
and points between. I never knew what number or what
the road was called, we just knew how to get from
here to there. From previous reports I though 23S16
was the road from Greenhorn summit to Johnsondale.
With that, I figured I’d head to the top of Greenhorn
summit and begin my ride from there. Wrong.

Wednesday, 9/16 1100, the FJ1200 is ready to roll.

    Heading towards the Kern Canyon

Once I got to Greenhorn summit, I discovered this.

Not the same road. The road number was not 23S16 but 24S15,
but I knew this is what we had taken to get to Johnsondale
    so long ago

I traveled the road for a couple hundred yards and turned
back as it was nothing but hard washboard dirt and gravel.
Not knowing how long before it turned into asphalt, I turned
back and headed for Johnsondal to take 23S16 from the other direction.

    The road to Johnsondale

After a bit of a ride, here we are.

The road here is full of bumps, humps, sand, and a few pine cones,
be careful. After a few miles I come to a fork in the road.

Just off to the right of this pic is a sign 23S16, I'm on the right path.

    Another sign post.

After a few miles, I come to this picture window.

    The road ahead.

Sand and gravel are common along this stretch.

A view across the canyon. You can see the
road to Sherman Pass is over that way.

    Looking ahead

    Intermission.

    1344, time for target practice.
I bought this little .22 a few years ago at Floyd’s General Hardware store and haven’t shot it yet.
I figured this would be a good time

No hiccups, hits point of aim, just what I'd expect from Ruger.

    On the road again.
One of several meadows along the way.

    Another crossroads. Asphalt only goes
one way. Not too hard to figure which
    way to go.

    More pics

    The country side

    The road ahead.

    This should look familiar.

    Goat.

Whew! Glad that's out of the way.

A view from on high looking south/east.

A little bit further and this...

Now, here is where it all comes together.
    Remember this? Greenhorn summit.

Here is where 24S15 connect to 23S16 via six miles
of washboard dirt and gravel. The road marker at
    Portuguese Pass.

So, six miles of dirt vs. 11 miles of goat. I take the goat.
Actually, the road from Sugarloaf down to Glenville is two
lane divided road, so . . . five miles of goat.

    The goat to Glenville.

    Made in the shade!

    And it's all downhill.

It's a bumpy ride to Sugarloaf.

A few old buildings in the area.

    Divided road heading to Glenville.

Along the way I come to a fork in the road, so I take it. Now on the road to Glenville via Jack Ranch Road. Old barn along Jack Ranch road.

Soon I come to Glenville. At Glenville I decide to
take hwy 155 to the S.J. valley instead of Granit or Glenville Woody
road, enough twisties for today. Hwy 155 is a nice go fast
road once your out of the twisties. Into the valley then
south on hwy 65 to home.

    That's all folks!

Ahh, 23S16. One of my favorite subjects. Google is wrong because it shows 24S15 as being 23S16. I went ahead and road 24S15 to Portugese Pass anyway. I figured what the heck. Shoot, I still have some ride pics to post.
