    1992 BMW Dakar

    Hi all,

    This is my first post here. I'm looking at a 1992 Dakar for ~$7k. The ad says it's got 24000 miles and the pictures show it to be in good shape. It also comes with Hecpco Becker Gobi saddlebags. Does anyone have an opinion on the price? It seems a little high for 92 but only 24000 miles...

    I bought a stock 2003 Dakar.

    $7650 out the door. (7000 + tax&license)

    Lucas, I think you are talking about a R100 GS-PD, correct?

    I believe Paul is talking about the 650 Dakar.

    In '92 they only made the R100 (1000cc) GS-PD model.
    (I believe)

    What options does the '92 come with (besides the bags)?
    Heated grips?
    Suspension upgrades?
    Stock exhaust?
    Solo and tandem saddles?
    Maintenance Records?

    7K$ does seem a little high, but then again... it IS an airhead!

    As a comparison there's currently a '93 PD on Cycletrader for $5900.
    44K miles on it tho. And it lists some accessories.
    Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight!

    Hmmm...

    Same Bike my buddy, Manny, has.
    Same year & Color & Crash Bar combo.

    Don't know what it is "really" worth.

    But... Kelly Blue Book (KBB) has it shown as $4555
    As seen here (for my area code)

    This NADA Quote seems quite low.

    IMO The 88-95GS platform is a solid one. It is a trusty steed capable of going a lot of places.
    That huge (near 9 Gallon) fuel tank on the GS-PD's can make it a bit top heavy when fully fueled and loaded. But man can you go a long way on a tankful.
    My 88 R100 only has a 5.6 Gallon tank so when riding with Manny (and his '92) all I had to do was carry a siphon tube and empty water bottle. He was my spare tanker.

    I like my '88 R100GS. It's taken me to a lot of cool places.
    Got it for $6K back in '95 with 2500 miles on it.
    It had Ohlins shock and Progressive springs added to it already.
    They've got their weaknesses (diode boards) but nothing that can't be easily upgraded.
    Don't get this bike for wheeling or really rough riding. Although they can do it the older shaft drive rear cannot handle it long term.

    Don't forget the options on that bike. It looks like a Corbin seat that would cost around $450 and the bags would be another $600 and the bar and lights and who knows what else. I'm thinking it's not a great deal, but a good one for a great bike.

    I just bought a 2001 R1150GS pretty loaded for less. (But I got a good deal, I think.) On the other hand, the bike you're looking at looks pretty sweet (and has lower mileage and fewer dings than the one I just bought).

    Looks like this bike is better set up for serious adventuring than mine. But that adventuring hasn't happened in its first 14 years of life (based on the pristine condition) so will it in your possession? If not, and you're going to mostly ride it on the road like most of us, I'd say get a newer bike with ABS... (I'm a huge fan of the ABS.)

    Hi there.

    I have a '94 Airhead with over 100K on it, as you see to the left. As posted before the paralever driveline will need work as mileage climbs but should not be a worry now. By its age some seals could be going bad, and I would consider a service for this low mileage bike due to age.

    7K could be a bit high but many adventure riders prefer these relatively simple carbureted bikes over the newer types. The bags certainly raise the value by about 800, and a Dakar is preferable over a bone stock version, just for collectors' reasons.

    Unless you are a real airheader, a healthy GS1150 can be had for that and it's more fun to ride, IMHO.
