    April Fools Downunder

Summer is coming to an end, but the weather has been great - right up until our planned April 1 ride weekend! Two of my boyhood friends like old British bikes and have 30+ year old Norton twins. Bad weather or not we wanted to ride, so myself (VFR800), usual riding buddy Marty (Kawasaki ZX9R), Andy (69 Norton Commando) & Steve ('71 Norton Commando) decided to reduce the length of the planned section of the trip along the Great Ocean Road (GOR). We came from our respective towns and met in Colac (approx 2 hrs from Melbourne), from Colac we headed through the Otway Ranges to join the GOR at Apollo Bay. We rode on winding mountain roads in appalling conditions, heavy rain and gale force wind gusts as we neared the coast. Down to 6 degrees Celcius at one stage - this time a week ago it was 32C at the same spot!

Just after I took this shot

A huge wind gust caught my bike and over it went! A few scratches on the fairing lower and my brake lever bent into a J shape as a consequence.

Once on the GOR the weather cleared up quite a bit!

Here's Andy on the '69 Commando followed by Steve on his '71 model.

On towards this famous landmark - the (once) 12 Apostles.

We cruised around to the small city of Warrnambool (Population approx 22,000) and checked into our motel. Had a good evening with lots of laughs, gourmet pizza and shiraz and then a few beers as well!

The next morning the sun even came out, and more importantly, no rain.

Andy had to head home to pick his winemaking grapes, so the three of us remaining headed inland as planned towards Halls Gap in an area known as the Grampians National Park.

Just after Christmas this area was ravaged by some of the worst bushfires we have had in years, however, eucalyptus trees can regenerate quite well after fires. New growth was evident already.

We had lunch at Hall's Gap, a small holiday town in the centre of the National Park. All the hiking trails are closed because of falling trees etc so the town was pretty quiet.

We headed off inland back towards Melbourne. Near Ballarat we split up and headed towards our respective homes.

Arrived home around 4.00pm - 775 kms of good riding - although the wet cool weather was quite a contrast to the months of summer heat we have been having.

Great pix as usual Jules...thanks for sharing. Looking a bit chilly there now...your winter weather doesn't look alot different than the weather we have been having, which for us is fairly unusual for spring!! Rain rain go away....
    Bring on the summer heat

I think yhe RAIN was the Aprils Fools joke on us. It's sort of funny when you think about it 2 hemispheres apart and we all end up riding in the wet and to the ocean! Looks like a very beutiful place. One of these days....

    Great pics! Thanks

Great pix and nice report... So different! Aren't you fellers afraid of riding on the left side o' the road like that? ERm.... OK I am told this is normal.

Is that really a running Norton? Kudos!

    Jules,
Nice photos again , and a good read .............. shame about your bike ,but if it's any consolation we had blustery conditions in Engalnd to day as well , along with intermittent showers it made for some interesting " moments " in my ride out today with Meanfiddler .
Glad that the bike survived to be ridden another day .

*chuckles* We're waiting to dry out and start our riding season and you're ending yours. That GOR looks awesome. Whats "shiraz"?
