Always searching for that one special magazine cover shot out of the hundreds of pics I normally take on a ride. Finally got a chance to work through my Panoche Rd Hwy J1 pics, and what do I spy?

Quite enamored with this shot, this is Phil (Strega 51)...

Yep, beautiful, Tim. Crisp in background and foreground, excellent composition and perspective, and suggestive of motion, coming uphill. K, I guess I need to start a moto mag just to put yer photos on the cover!! (Too bad Good Housekeeping hasn't discovered moto touring yet.

My suggested title? "From the Light into the Shadow" or "As I ride upon the mountain of the shadow of...". Great pic. The cloud cover causes quite a contrast. The power towers in the background look like ghosts. The bike looks absolutely mean. How did the road traverse those moguls? I love this site. Always something worth looking at. Keep those toes pointed IN Strega 51!

Okay - here's the rest. I did whip up a whole bunch of long-winded poetic text, but I'll save that for a new and improved webpage on the lil gem.

Panoche Rd - San Benito Co, Central Coastal California, aka Highway J1

First of course a map of where we're headed today....

Gassing up in Tres Pines (just south of Hollister, CA). Not Phil's bike, but it could be. Note the exhaust cans & the mirrors (cafe style mounted on the bar ends). Beauty! These guys were headed over to Laguna to ride some laps on the track.

I rode this route the other direction last October. Was my first Pashnit-informed long ride and I LOVED it - it's a very diverse road, and nice and long. No traffic and absolutely gorgeous. Definitely one of my favorite roads in CA.
