Where Charles Darwin wooed and wed.

Another evening in Staffordshire and a trip to Maer. The village is very pretty and I left the bike athe start of the village and explored by foot as the roads were full of farm traffic, going very fast.

After Josiah Wedgwood died in 1795, his son, Josiah Wedgwood II bought and moved to Maer Hall, a 17th century mansion about ten miles from the Wedgwood manufactory at Etruria in Stoke-on-Trent. the Potteries. There, one of the frequent visitors was Charles Darwin, who was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin, JWthe first's doctor. Charles fell in love with JWII's lovely daughter, Emma , who was his cousin.

They got married in the church at Maer in 1839

andall the family were buried

These are some of the things that Darwin might have seen as he walked around his wife's village

Some views of the village

And as the sun set, it was back on the K100RS and back to Stoke for me.

Beautiful. I love the old houses and buildings. I always wonder about the maintenance, though. It's not cheap.
Anyway, nice photos.

Well, Maer Hall is now owned by a retired property developer. I understand the company he used to own has gone bust. I wonder where all the money went?

Lovely pictures, Andrew. I've always been interested in Darwin - someday when I'm independently wealthy I want to travel the route of the Beagle. What a neat thing to see some of the same sites. Maer looks like a charming place, what a great tour! I especially like the second-to-last picture. Positively idyllic!

Fascinating stuff Andrew. It seems that, wherever you go in this country, there's history just around the corner.

Really nice photos, well done.

Oh Dirty Girl you're right. That 2nd to last is like a painting, just the right light, and shading, and frame.
Andrew, the money probably went for expenses, then when the economy soured, even expenses could not be covered. And I suppose the historic old house will suffer.
Anyway, I hope to see more ride reports like these again, soon.

Absolutely great photos. I have always loved the colors in English church glass! Thanks for posting.
