Another eccentric character, like Forestierre who dug a home underground in Fresno. Hmmm... Maybe we should all organize a motorcycle tour of the "eccentricities" of California. It could include Hearst Castle, Forestierre Underground Gardens, Winchester Mystery House and NittWitt Ridge... any others?

Re: NittWitt ridge in cambria...

Going that extra mile to explore every nook and cranny of the Central Coast, here's Nitt Wit Ridge.

Okay, so I sound a bit eccentric. But it fits. Arthur Harold Beal, alias Capt Nit Wit or Der Tinkerpaw, has a well know reputation for being a bit odd. But owning a house with a view like this ain't bad.

Often called the Poor Man's Hearst Castle, like William Randolph this residence is the end product of an obsession. Where WR Hearst may have been spending the family fortune, Arthur was trying to build the cheapest castle he could.

Starting in 1928 and continuing for 51 years, he collected junk, trash, and recycled goods to use in his castle. A favorite material seems to be old Busch beer cans, which were always in supply. Be he also used washer drums, car rims, shells, tile, car parts, and old stove and about anything else people wanted to throw out.

The property is now owned and being maintained by Michael and Stacey O'Malley. Michael gives an awesome tour of the property and all you have to do is call to make an appointment. The tours are free and everyone really enjoys themselves. There are also some gift items available including T-Shirts, business card magnets and coffee cups.
We'll show you a small sample of the tour here.

I don't think that any of us will ever live long enough to see all of the
"eccentricities" of California ...

I've taken the tour. The O'malleys are great folks who are doing their best to restore this neat place.

There is alot of history to this home most of which is bad blood between the county/residents of cambria vs Mr.beal.They tried for decades to get this place condemed and tore down.eventually before Art died they mangaed to get this registered as a historic landmark but the county got the last laugh as they pulled the water meter and no one can ever live there again. It sat empty for long time and got pretty trashed but thanks to the O'malleys they are trying to restore it to it's former glory.
