Re: Pashnit & Cycle World Magazine - 1000 Mile Journey to NorCal
Wow, amazing post Tim!
I especially loved the shots in Marin, with the bikes. The bikes are all of the era when I fell in love with motorcycles, and where, in Marin where I grew up (Mill Valley). Especially love that RD, the original wing-ding-ding! |

Wow, what fun to be involved with the making of a cool article! Thanks for the pashnit scoop! I think its really cool doing the $1000 bike thing, presumably to show the readers that you dont have to be rich to get into motorcycling! What fun. I hope it doesnt make people run out and snatch up all the old beemers though,I have been wanting one for awhile!

Tim, awesome ride! I got to read the article in CW a few times this weekend on my camping trip, then got to read through your version just now. Looks like most of you had a lot of fun!
By the way, running a two-stroke like that RD out of oil isn't as serious as running a four-stroke out of oil. It's similar to running a four-stroke out of gas. You just have to catch it sooner.

Great article in the mag and cool "behind the scenes" story right here. Congrats on the photo credit in the mag of the guy priming the oil pump or whatever it was on the RD. I always thought they took the formation pics from the back of a van, but that's cool they do it on a bike.

My recollection is that Girdler was the chief editor of CW years ago, prior to (I think) Paul Dean. And he is considered quite the expert on HD's, particularly Sportsters and XR750's (I believe he owns/owned an iron XR750 licensed for the street). If memory serves he also rode an original (~1975) XL250 for years. Cheers, Kurt |
