Advice for short biker please...

My wife Kath is just 5 feet tall. She owns a Suzuki GZ125cc Marauder (a cruiser for learners - see below) which she's not that keen on.

She feels she has been forced to buy a cruiser rather than a 'proper' (her word not mine) motorbike.

What we're looking for is a normal motorbike that will allow someone 5 feet tall to put both on the ground when stationary.

Something that looks like this but smaller (Honda CB125)

We have scoured the UK for such a bike without success. Kath is so disappointed that she has written to the senior Managing Director of Honda in Japan as he has claimed to want to 'make the bike to fit you' as part of Honda's marketing campaign.

We are not at all interested in lowering kits, sculpted seats, platform boots or any other ad hoc adjustment.

There must be a bike out there made for short people - after all there are some nations whose average citizen height is much less than the UK. How do they cope? I am happy to import a bike to the UK.

Do you know of such a bike?

Hope you can help.

Thanks for that Steve.

The seat height for the Kawasaki Ninja 250R is 30.9 inches / 785mm.

Kath cannot cope with any seat height above 27.2 inches / 690mm.

Nice bike though.

Definitely!
My ex wanted a bike, and not even the 250 Ninja was manageable for her, and she was the same height ( 5' ). The Buell Blast with the low seat-height option still left her using the tips of her toes to balance the bike, which was not a tenable situation. IMO no matter what, I believe some seat surgery will be in order for your dear wife!

This might be helpful:

Scroll down to see a chart of "shorter" bikes, seat height, and mods (if any). Good luck

Re: Advice for short biker please...

Hello Stephen and Kath!
Sadly, in my experience there are few bikes other than cruiser style motorcycles, that fit a smaller woman's inseam. I have read a ton of stuff on lowering, platform boots and all the things you mention that you aren't interested in. Unfortunately your choices are very limited.

I sat on the Honda125 at Femmoto and it was pretty short, but then it was also a very tiny displacement machine that would more than likely not stand up to a group ride of larger bikes. I am not sure how much riding Kath will do solo, but I don't believe this bike will work for long, even though it was pretty sweet looking.

Most machines are tall for me and I am 5'6". I can NOT flatfoot my bandit. I don't believe I have ever been able to flat foot any bike I have enjoyed riding. I can flat foot any cruiser.

I wish i had an answer. I too would love to flat foot a bike, but I don't believe it is going to happen any time soon, until manufacturers understand that there is a large unserved market out there with 30inch and under inseams!!

I did find this link and if you scroll 1/2 way down the page you will see many machines with suggested rider heights on both original and altered machines. I found it to be pretty eye-opening, though it is somewhat outdated. I would like to think they are now making more bikes for the shorties!!

Here's another blog to read regarding the best bikes for women!

My high school buddies wife wanted a bike, and she was short too. They ended up with a Honda Hawk. I checked the specs and it is 30.4 inches, so too big. I don't think you can drop 3 inches on it, but then I don't know much about the bike. -- John

My girlfriend is 5'1". She can touch on a buell blast, The low harley sportsters aka nightster, and sv650. BTW most bikes can be lowered with a little extra money and work. Here is kouba link a lowing link you may want to check out. http://www.koubalink.com/. I put one on a DR-Z 400 once. Easy install.

My wife (Sassy) is 4 foot 6 inches tall and rides a Yamaha Virago 1100 -- you can find some good deals and low mileage ones in the 1994 to 1995 years

I could not find any bikes except cruiser type that were low enough, of the ones I found here are a few

The Honda Rebel 250 has a seat height of 26.6
The Hondal VXT1300 has a seat height of 27.5
THE Honda Shadow 750 has a seat height of 27.5
