Help2 Happy St George's Day - Advice please

Hi all

I decided to take a loooooooooong day off to celebrate St George's Day (that's my excuse) and
visit a gorgeous small historic town less than 5 miles from where I live.

I'd like to post the photos with my report but have 85 (unbelievably I took 571 photos - there's a
huge amount of history in what was Charles Dickens' stomping ground).

Here's a taster shot - it's Eastgate House in Rochester, England built in 1591 and described by
Dickens as 'Westgate House' in Pickwick Papers and 'The Nun's House' in Edwin Drood.

I'm happy to post 16 replies to my first message, each with 5 photos but am conscious that we
recently had a limit on posting photos.

Questions:

Does that limit still apply? If not, fine.

If so, what are my options?

Thanks in advance

It seems that where you live, EVERYTHING is interesting to me. I can see how you could just keep turning in circles shooting pics of it all. I suppose you could use flickr or some other host site, and just link to the pics. Put them somewhere where I can see them all.
Looks like you and the new camera are getting along fine.

That's what I do... I use Smugmug, upload all the pics (after I've gone through to weed out the really crappy ones), then post IMG tags for my favorites. If people want to see the whole album, they are welcome to do that.

I usually use Photobucket; Smug Mug ain't free (although I do have an account, it's just quicker to upload to Photobucket, for me anyway).

Post some more of 'em. I like this stuff.

OK. You've twisted my arm. Just one more teaser photo.

This is a shot of Two Post Alley which is not only listed but 'listing'. If you were to
walk along it and look up you would see just how far it is leaning. It was once the
main access from the High Street to Rochester Castle and would have been the route
taken by the townsfolk seeking sanctuary in the castle in time of trouble.

The castle was one of the first to be built of stone and at 125 feet is the tallest keep
in England and was constructed by the Bishop of Rochester in around 1090 in the angle
of the Roman town wall.

I love this shot but didn't notice the sunlight bleed until after I got home. I can always
take it again I guess.

I hope I can post these photos without breaking guideline limits. Fingers crossed.

Steve ,
Like others , I have a Smugmug account , which is great for storing photos and linking etc . Or, as others have , you could look at Flickr or Photobucket .

The UK has so much history you could spend a lifetime exploring and still not see it all .

Looking forward to the photos ,

Ride safe,
Steve

I didn't get any messages to say there was a limit so I went for it.

It's here in all it's glory.

Enjoy

Those are certainly nice photos, Steve, and nice old buildings.
One question I always have with these old buildings, such as Eastgate House, constr'd 1591, is, how much rebuilding and restoration has been done.
Some of them are known to have burned, and been totally rebuilt, then my question always is, exactly the same, or with many updates and modifications.
I know some of the newer castles, etc., can be found in total ruin, roof gone, parts of walls gone, etc.
Like someone else said, interesting.

Good point David. I suppose if you have modern castles then they're probably treated like
normal homes and left to rot.

Most functioning castles, stately homes and listed buildings in England MUST be maintained
in their original condition using original materials where feasible.

Most of our castles are old enough to have been ravaged by battles and over zealous Kings
and Queens on rampages.

I checked out Eastgate House and found this 3D zoomable and pannable panorama site.
Check out the ceiling in room 1 - looks original to me (even if it has been cleaned and patch
repaired). It's a cool online device.

I'm no expert but I say that roof looks to good to be 400 years old. I think it was redone in the 1880's.
Italy, these ceilings with the frescoes, the plaster flakes off after a few years and they redo them constantly.
Getty museum here, 500 year old paintings, they clean and repaint them all the time. They have a large (numerous) staff full time to clean and repaint.
Eastgate house, I think the mortar between the bricks, that has been redone. Maybe brick by brick, and recently. Electrical wiring in the 1920's.
In Florida last year, Civil War era house, knowledgeable state tour guide. He said their mills were blown up during the war (1860's). By which side, says I. Depends on who you ask, says he. They didn't want the mills to fall into 'enemy' hands. Or not.
Many of the restorations they do, they do an excellent job of making it look old, even though the just redid it.
I know from friends all about the trust. But I also understand they never have sufficient funds to do all the maintenance they should.
Ach, I'm all hung up on the details.
