Shrug What's the best Photo-sharing website?

A little to resurrect this thread.

Photobucket, in their infinite wisdom, has "upgraded" their site once again and made a mess of (what I thought) was a pretty simple site and some pretty simple tools.
I've managed to find "most" of what I am used to using for RRs but it's pretty clunky and the "new look" leaves something to be desired.

Has anyone migrated from one photo-sharing site to another and what happens to your old images ??
Can you bring them over or ar they lost into cyber hell when your subscription expires or you close your account ??

I've never relied on any of the photo sharing services to be the sole repository of my photos, only a place to share them, so that if they closed down I would lose nothing. I haven't looked at my photobucket account for a while so I don't know what they've done this time.

That having been said, what typically happens when the site closes or you close your account, your images go into the bit bucket and are gone forever. If one is real lucky, the service makes arrangements with another service to transfer your data once you approve the transfer.

I don't know of any reliable way to transfer photos from one service to another. It's going to take a fresh upload.

Sorry buddy

I've used most of the more popular sites other than smugmug and find that for sharing, posting, and allowing friends to see photos without having to register, Flickr is pretty darned good. I do have the "Pro" account which runs $25/yr for unlimited uploads.

Smugmug is much more flexible and at the higher rates is really geared for the professional or semi-pro photographer.

I copy all my RR photos to PB just for that specific purpose...the originals are on my HD and an external drive

It would be really nice if someone knew that....I'm trying to find that out

Re: What's the best Photo-sharing website?

I throw away most of my pictures and keep only the ones that look somewhat okay to my eye or or have some intrinsic personal significance. I keep some of 'em on SmugMug. Photobucket I use mainly for posting to fora; different account for each forum. I have some on Panoramio--the ones I put on Google Earth. Many of those are snapshots. Flickr--I have some there too; not sure why. Of all of these services, I like SmugMug best. Photobucket seems to mess with the levels and contrast for some reason. I've probably said all of this before but I didn't take a few seconds to scroll back through the thread to check.
There. 995.

Re: What's the best Photo-sharing website?

I tried the new photobucket as an alpha demo and it was buggy as heck. Now that they are making everyone switch to the new version it seems to be stabilizing somewhat but my 'puter froze a couple times during my last RR. I am liking the quick "get links" feature though....

I recently tried dropbox... didn't really care for the interface and I had to download it as a program. Who knows what the heck I downloaded with it but I removed it soon after.

I think I'll give flickr a shot for awhile.

I don't think it's a good fit for using it on RRs.....

My biggest bitch about PB was it was working just fine (for me)....why'd they have to go and change it ??

I know. If it ain't broke why fix it, right? I like things simple and quick, not "feature rich". Feature rich usually translates to slow and buggy.

"Feature rich" = a good looking wealthy woman with NO kids, ex-husband, and rides her own bike
