RT demolition and new clutch

The old RT needs a new clutch before I can sell it, so again it was wrenching at Dan's C-Ranch. The Buell Blast of my daughter had some issues, too, mainly poor running under power (idling was just fine ). To get both bikes up to Dan, he came down to Belmont, parked his bike here and rode the Buell to Los Gatos, via Skyline and Alice's ( for breakfast ). At Alice's, we met with Roxanne, who got some lights done on her k-bike. A clutch job on the RT is kinda crazy, you have to take half the bike apart. They need about 10 hours at the dealer for that, for us, it doing it for the first time, it would take much longer ...

Today was demolition day, taking all the goodies off ( for use on the new RT ) and start dismantling ...

RT and Buell Blast, ready to go

Dan rolling in

Dan and his ' new ' bike. I think that poor thing was never chased that quick around corners

But it was fun, apparently

Scramble with chorizo, no cheese, sourdough and fruit instead hash browns. Yummy.

Roxanne and Dan

Dan in his small backyard, showing the work he did in the couple last days

I have not the slightest idea what I'm doing here, as usual ...

Oh, yes, and a new battery, as well

Let the wrenching begin ...

On the lift

Everything is good ...

Re: RT demolition and new clutch

Some of the goodies, being swapped to the new bike : PIAA's, Autocom, running lights, ...

While Dan is busy with Roxanne's bike

Rear wheel is off, starting to take of the final drive

with the help of a heat gun to loosen up the locetite

Seems to be in pretty good order, no shavings or other unwelcome particles

Rear end of the drive shaft

The exhaust was a bit more work, but with a lot of wiggeling and slight hammering, it came loose

The drive shaft, coming out of the transmission

After taking of the fuse box, rear subframe, and tons of cable binders, almost done. The only thing that still has to go, is the transmission. Well, next week ...

The front still looks kinda OK

more next week ...

We may have been able to cut a few corners, but I would rather just get it all out in the open and make sure we do it all right. I have been told this is one of the big reasons the police are moving away from the RTs. Clutches are high mortality items with police work and a 12 hour job vs 2 hours at the most job on a Kawi or Harley is a big deal. I went through the screws the other day ... stunned so few fasteners hold the back of that bike together.

Kris,

we're not done yet. This Thursday the transmission will come out and we will try, time permitting, to swap the shocks ( almost brand new Wilbers ) from the old to the new one. No idea how Dan is going to balance the bike without the front shock, but he has a plan

Since the gas tank of the new RT has to come off as well, we're going to route some wires ( gps, autocom, PIAA's, powersport usb ) ...

Re: RT demolition and new clutch

Ralph,
Just made me think, can you get some new quick disconnects in by then? Those plastic ones need to go.
