Saturday Morning on Little Dragon

A great day for a ride. Saturday morning, I left Merced and headed up to Coulterville to play on 49 while the weather was still cool. After passing through Snelling, I traveld up Merced Falls Road as a warm up for the twisties. Fun road but really bumpy.

When I reached Coulterville, I was greeted by a welcome surprise, fresh asphalt. The entire length has been repaved. On my first pass I was stuck behind 4 cagers up to the bridge. After getting passed them, the road was clear to the top. My old Wing can still grind the pegs. I didn't see much oncoming traffic, so I headded back for another pass. I cut 2 minutes off my time without traffic. I'm not sure what the street bikes do for times on a pass, but I did the 14 miles in 20 minutes.

I stopped outside the Jeffery for a couple minutes and spoke to some riders heading up to James town. Just as I got ready to leave, I got stung by a damn bee. I made a slower third pass, and took Bear Valley Road through Hornitas, and back to Merced.

It was a great morning to ride, and I made it home before it got to hot out. My arm is swollen from the bee sting, but it was worth it.

Wow good news! I'm surprised they've repaved it, I remember when I first joined this forum and rode it for the first time and it had just been repaved then. Good thing though because parts of it had tons of tar snakes on it.

Thanks for the tip. I have a GL1500 like yours but I think I'll take the Ducati and hit it after the hot weather clears

Re: Saturday Morning on Little Dragon

FYI, right now the little dragon is covered in fresh gravel. Give it a couple weeks and maybe they'll be finished laying down the new surface.

Yeah, the Little Dragon is a mess. I just rode it last weekend (8/19/12) and it was the worse I've ever seen.

Rich, just for comparison, our ride time through the Little Dragon from the Top (Fremont's Fort) to Culterville (Hotel Jeffery) with a few cars thrown in and horrible road conditions was just north of 17 minutes.

Okay...a few of us are headed up to Red Bluff for the new Pashnit Crater Lake Tour, and we were planning to ride 49 from Oakhurst to Grass Valley the middle of next week. Is any part of this stretch of 49 under construction or in poor condition?
