1984 R65 Can't Turn On
I woke the next day to get back on my bike. It was right before a storm was coming through.
I get on, roll off the center stand, put the key in the ignition, turn the kill switch to run, gas turned to on, and finally hit the starter. The dashboard's lights go out, and I hear a clicking. I turn the key, turn it back to on. Nothing. Turn the kill switch off, and a sound comes from under me like a constant "mmmmraaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh" and then stops. Alright, try this again... I see my neutral light come back on when I turn everything on again, but I hit the starter and the same thing happens. This time I notice the rpms are up to the 3-4k range. I checked my battery, and it's fully charged. I'm not quite sure what the problem is... Anyone have a clue? I tried to be as descriptive as I can. |

Re: 1984 R65 Can't Turn On
simple things first --- since the battery is charged
1) check all ground connections -- unbolt and clean the connections -- start at the battery terminal and work your way down to the main connection at the frame 2) while the grounds are not connected do the same for the positive connections - -especially those that may be at a relay/solenoid and connected to the starter my son had a similar problem recently on his golf cart from 198? -- there is no manual - -so I just started at the battery and traced it out -- found 3 broken wires and several dirty connections on the way == other than the fact the motor is worn out, it starts and does run on flat ground

would have been nice to know if you were able to get it running

Re: 1984 R65 Can't Turn On
Have you tried to bump start it? Sounds like the starter may not be engageing. I think if your battery is charged you should be able to have somebody push you, or aim it down hill and put it 2nd or 3rd and see if it will start. I had to do it to my R65 when the battery was down to about 10.5 volts.
