Hayfork to Hyampom road condition

I'm planning a ride from the bay area to Oregon and we'll be staying in Weaverville one night. I noticed on my map a road that goes from Hayfork to Hyampom. Has anyone here been on that road and can comment on the condition ? Paved ? twisties ? traffic ? etc. Thanks in advance.

This road is paved with misery.

Re: Hayfork to Hyampom road condition

Don't know how it is at the moment, but back in early June it was dirt just a few miles west of Hayfork, and they were actively working on it.

Here is the Hyampon Road Summer Closure Schedule. It shows closures through Aug. 19. After that there will be only punch list work (see below). So maybe it's paved now.

Here is a page where Trinity County DOT tweets updates on road work.

Thanks for the info. We will be in that area on Sept. 4th If anyone knows for sure that it is paved by then let me know. Our streetbikes don't do well off pavement. Thanks, Gary

Hey Bonnie - that looks like a fun road! What was the nature of the road work? Is it being paved or were they repairing and grading a dirt road?

Hey Gary - we take our 13-14 yo VFRs on dirt as long as it's graded and hard-packed. Here's a picture of our bikes on Santa Rita Road which was about 15-20 miles of graded dirt.

I do believe they were re-paving it (it used to be paved according to Mr. GN and others in the know). If it was re-paved, it should be a killer little ride. There is a loop to do out of Hayfork - to Hyampom, thence to Corral Bottom Road (all paved), to 299 at Big Bar. There are lots of other options, most unpaved but good gravel. Fall would be a good time, as there would be nice colors in the trees (not to mention cooler than fry-an-egg-on-the-road temps).

P.S. Santa Rita Road looks very nice!
