Re: The Back Series: A Pashnit Photographic Essay
Another style of shot of capturing groups of riders, but de-emphasize your ability to actually see them, their faces, their expressions, etc. Trick is to frame the shot, that's done with the tree, add in the bike which sets the scene, than add in some motion among the riders. This one is purposely under-exposed by metering off the sky b/c I want to place more emphasis on the background, than the foreground, 'black out', or frame the riders against the sky. Gives me a much different feel than just a shot of some guys standing around talking.

Re: The Back Series: A Pashnit Photographic Essay
Shooting riders in motion, takes a bit of practice to get the shutter just right as the rider zooms on by. In a sense, trying to get a shot where you're looking over their shoulder, much like the ones of the stationary riders.
![]() Or a shot of the scenery, trick is to get a bike in there to tell the story. Both of these are shot on Hwy 4 - Ebbetts Pass in the Sierra Nevada.

And then on the same tone, shooting groups of riders in motion from behind. Trick is getting a shot that knocks your socks off. Need to shoot 10-15 shots to get one good one.

Re: The Back Series: A Pashnit Photographic Essay
Finally really got the 'sense of space' with this shot looking at Half Dome and down at the valley floor 3000 feet straight down below. Hard part was figuring out how to create that sense of space. Finding the highest rock, holding the camera over my head, and pointing the camera straight down finally got the feel I wanted.

Re: The Back Series: A Pashnit Photographic Essay
oooh! can i play!? this isn't even on a road... this was some serious 1x2ing action to get to this vista..in fact, i even got high centered once, and had to rock kitty back and forth while roosting dirt everywhere in one spot. and i had to single track for a little while as well, often going through tight cracks in huge boulders to get there.
