Hey Brett,

There certainly are many good rides here in South Carolina. Twisties along the Blue Ridge Escarpment, flats in the low country.

Also many sights to see: waterfalls, mountain views, lakes, historic buildings, antique collections, picturesque downtowns, museums, even a satellite tracking station.

I am an older newbie on a Kawasaki Ninja 650R, riding about 18 months now, ~10,000 miles.

I enjoy riding to some destination, seeing what is there, and riding on. Mostly day trips.

I know there are some riders from Athens, GA. Not exactly close, but much closer than CA.

You might want to look up R5_350 (http://pashnit.com/forum/member.php?u=181). He's reasonably active here and is back east.

I'd look in North Georgia, Western NC/SC, and eastern TN. In GA, look up 60, 180, 52, 17/75, 348. In NC, 129 (the Dragon) and the Cherohola Skyway.

There is a very large population of motorcycle riders of all types, slow, fast, cruisers, sportbike, scooter, touring.

Many meet up at the Holly Springs Country Store at the intersection of SC-11 and US-178 (north of the red star right at the "t" in Sunset, SC on the map).

The roads Needles mentions ans the sites listed by Bucky are what I would suggest as well. Route 11 in northeastern SC is a great road from beginning to end.
