Mapping program

Sorry, I remember someone using a great mapping program (Microsoft I think), where you could add names and such to the display. Sorry I searched threads and couldn't find it again. It was in the last week and I believe it was someone in So. Calif. Best info I can remember.

Re: Mapping program

I use microsoft streets and tips, a good program for the money ie cheap. Tim uses another one that is better but I can't remember the name now.

Re: Mapping program

Galen - I'm using three different mapping programs on the pashnit.com site. The Microsoft Streets & Trips is the maps you see on all the road pages- however the secret is each and every map is cleaned up (numbers removed), individually labeled in a photoshop style program, and I even will hand draw the roads if need be (program claims roads doesn't exist sometimes). There are hundreds of these that I have created. The program is down to like $30-40. There are numerous competing programs on the rack just like this one. It's especially useful in planning trips - the Pashnit Custom Trip Planning I do for example- someone might say I'd like day to be 200 miles. Easy to do, in the old days, I'd be sitting there with a pencil adding up mileage markers.

The new one is Delorme 3-D Mapping program which is the 3-D maps you see sprinkled around the site. Have done a 100 or so of these - they're alot of work.

The new one is the new Keyhole software that the folks there asked me to work with. Very cool stuff- 3-D Satellite Mapping of roads, and ability to create mini-movies that 'fly' over the region or road. My computer is a little slow and the program is a bit in it's infancy. You can download a 10-day trial version.

Re: Mapping program

Another local ride to you - Mt. Diablo's North Gate Rd & Morgan Territory Rd (to Clayton). - this is the Delorme 3-D mapping progam. Night & day different from the 2-D stuff.

(Click on any one of these: http://www.pashnit.com/maps-topo/ )
