Show Low, AZ

Saturday was going to be hot here in Phoenix, so as all desert animals do, we seek where it's cooler. To the mountains we go! I've done Prescott many, many times so it was time to head towards the White Mountains and the town of Show Low, elevation 6,500 ft. You'd think it would be a lot cooler, but it was still 85 there. But if you do the math it's a good 25 degrees cooler than the valley.

Got together with a couple of friends from my squadron. Oldy, Mochal, and Flick. (last name/nickname basis) Oldy on the Ducati Monster 620, Moke on the R6, and Flick on the Harley Road King. While you have me on the Warrior. When all the bikes were parked together, the line from Ice Age kept popping in my head, "We're the strangest herd ever."

We left my house at 10:00 am. We tried for 9:30 but we never leave on time. Hopped on the I-10 and endured superslab for the first 60 miles of our journey. The only cool thing about the I-10 through Phoenix is the Deck Park Tunnel. I don't know what it is about riding through them, but you just feel instantly cooler. Temp wise and ego wise.

Everything was going well until we hit the US60 and construction. The freeway was closed. Half an hour later we were back on track and on our way to Globe, cool town especially the historical district. Didn't take any pictures, but if you do find yourself there, make sure you take the detour through old town Globe. Fuel and lots of fluids later we hop on the 60/77 north to hit Salt River Canyon on our way to Show Low.

Salt River Canyon is a little slice of motorcycle heaven. You enter one side of the canyon at the top and start working your way down. Lots of 30 mph marked sweepers, switchbacking towards the bottom of the canyon where you cross the Salt River Bridge to start working your way back up. The South side and North side ride very different.

The South side is reminiscent of Seven Level hill, with smooth sweepers as you switchback up/down the hill. The North Side is more like Yarnell with smooth turns working up the side of the hill, no switchbacking period. Both are a blast, a little on the short side, maybe 10 miles through the whole canyon, but still a blast.

Up to Show Low for lunch. We cruise through town looking for someplace to eat, when we see a couple of bikes parked outside a mexican restuarant. A couple of BMW's and a Honda. Didn't talk to them much, they were finishing eating while we were just orderng, but they were loaded up, looked like an adventure in the making.

Heading back the same up, we get to hit Salt River Canyon, and this time it was on like donkey kong. The corners are all perfectly banked and curved. No real surprises. Had a lot of fun heading back up.

Got back to Phoenix, bar-be-qued, had a lot of refreshing drinks and relaxed. Perfect day.

On to the pics
Mostly of Salt River, but the first is us leaving and the second is in the Tunnel

Damn I miss Arizona! I grew up in Tucson. Thanks for the great pictures and stirring up some old memories Jason!

Sorry Renee, should of pm'ed you. Definitly will next time.

No problem Dale, hopefully we catch each other in Malibu. Really want to ride with some fellow Pashnit riders.

Planning on doing 191 here either the 4th or 11th of June, going to try and run it in one day. I'll let everyone know the details after this weekend.

That's ok. The Mille is still apart and I'm trying not to put any miles (at least not that many) on the Kawi. And not that it matters, but I'll be having company on June 4th but...

Re: Show Low, AZ

Tim, sometime you are going to have to make a trip out to Arizona, not as road heavy as Cali, but the ones they have are pretty good.

Re: Show Low, AZ

Thanks a bunch or sharing the ride, Jason! Nice write-up and outstanding pix! I was trying to figure out how to reference my favorite shot, then saw that Tim had mirrored the very one in his reply. Something about the compostion there, and the suggestion of yet another curve in the background. Very very nice. But they're all great, in truth. Yet another thread from you AZ folks I'm gonna have to look up when planning to ride in AZ.

Thanks!!

Great roads for riding! I'm still waiting to see if Backmarker can actually stop for pictures along the Devils Highway! It's just to nice to stop for any reason!
