Pashnit's new Winter Commuting Machine - My Yamaha Venture

Check out my new bike, an '83 Yamaha Venture. 1200cc, a total behemoth, but you get used to the size and top-heaviness. Great for winter commuting on this Venture. Just cruises on down the road. Nothing fancy and don't need to impress anybody. 2nd gear is starting to go but bike comes with a spare motor with good tranny. This Venture brings back a lot of memories as I put about 50,000 miles on my last one in about 2 years time.

Re: Pashnit's new Winter Commuting Machine - My Yamaha Venture

The old Ventures are plentiful and easy to find - lots of spare parts for these too. The deals though usually aren't perfect or need a bit of work. This one is in decent shape, but 2nd gear going after 50K is really common.

Aside from 2nd gear, these things run like tanks, and are quite reliable. Only problem I've had was the fuse for the ignition lost contact with the brass contact & rolled to a stop on the side of the road. Had electrical power, but the bike wouldn't start- no current. Couldn't figure it out for a bit, then discovered it prompty when fiddling with fuse box. Fortunately, I always carry electricians tape and a leatheman (word to the wise) in my tank bag, and was able to wrap the fuse in electricians tape to get some contact. Bike started right up and was able to ride home where I melted on a whole bunch of solder to the cracked contact. Problem solved.

Re: Pashnit's new Winter Commuting Machine - My Yamaha Venture

Ultimately, I'd like to get rid of this bike, and move up to the Royale model which eventually came with the 1300cc motor, the CB, radio, cruise- all the electronic gizmos. Plus I need one with a trailer hitch to pull a trailer. Anyone know of one, let me know.

This one has a new windshield (they need to be replaced every 10 yrs or so from clouding), and a radio too which is kinda cool. No kitchen sink though.

Nice! That thing must feel like a Yugo after your Busa, though.

How many miles did the previous owner put on it?

Looks clean.

Shawn had it a year, and only put less than 2000 miles on it. wimp.

So it just clicked over 54,000. Not bad for a 20 yr old motorcycle.
