Ok, I know everyone likes to post pictures of thier bikes, nice rides, etc...How about showing the "not so great" moments of owning a motorcycle! I had the pleasure of throwing a chain today.
I got very lucky and avoided injury. The damage could have been so much worse! Lets "compare scars!" Show us your battle wounds! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Pictures of broken stuff!
A thrown chain, my greatest fear. I lost a chain once but was at low speed and waked away. Little damage to the bike. Thank God you are ok. Rides can be repaired.

Re: Pictures of broken stuff!
That looks odd...the sprocket appears to be happy, and there's no sign of the death-rust that would be present if you had neglected the chain.
Did the chain break, and if so, was it at the riveted master-link?.

Re: Pictures of broken stuff!
Luke, just looking at that hurts!
That happened to me on my ZX-11D and likely one of the more scary moments I've had on a bike. I'd pulled away from a stoplight & got about 1/2 mile and heard a sickening clunk! The master link had pulled apart and the chain basically busted in half at speed. I pulled in the clutch immediately and coasted to the side of the road. For whatever reason there was no damage to the bike thankfully Yours is nasty! How badly is the engine casing damaged?

Re: Pictures of broken stuff!
From what I can tell, the chain did come apart at the master link. The engine casing isn't bad. There is only one spot messed up but it shouldn't be a problem. It broke a small tab off where the top bolt threads in. They make an after market brace that stiffens that cover. It bolts in a couple places and goes across the top of the cover for extra support. The drag racers actually run clutch springs that are so stiff that they can crack this cover. With a new cover and that piece, she'll be better than new!

WoW! That must have been scary hearing all that metal shaving off. My greatest fear is having the chain hang up on the rear and riding out a uncontrollable skid. You were lucky!

Re: Pictures of broken stuff!
Way back when, I threw a chain on an Arial Square Four... sorta dates me... while on an L.A. freeway at freeway speed. I was young and dumb, and all I knew is that the engine ran, but I wasn't getting power to the rear wheel. Took the bike to Milne Brothers in Pasadena Ca where they let 'the kid' work on the bike in a corner of the shop out back. The chain piled..pyramided between the primary and secondary gears and didn't damage a thing. After looking at it, the Pro Wrenches said someone up there must really like me.....
It could have been my last hurrah. No helmet, no ATGATT......

Re: Pictures of broken stuff!
This was a ride with Doug, Dan, and Kipp up Yreka way, back in Oct. 2005. I still had the Suzuki Madura. We were headed up Sawyers Bar Road out of Etna. I guess the spline in my drive train had been wearing for quite some time. It finally gave out going up one of the hills. I had to coast the bike 15 miles all the way back to Etna.
