Painting the DRZ

Working on the DRZ. I am hoping/expecting to have all of the painting done tomorrow, but we'll see. I have the radiator shrouds done, the front fender done, and the plastics that protect the fork done. I have only the 3 side plastics left, the underside of the fork protectors to do, the rear plastic (which will be the hardest), the headlight, and the hand guards.

Here is some progress: It will be a blue/white combo just as it was before but a different color blue and a whiter/white

This is what it looked like previously:

Naked

They are actually white again!

The blue sprays on a bit Teal but finishes darker then it shows here

Here is the difference between the original color (on the front fender) and the new color (on the shrouds)

Here is what I accomplished after work. Hope to finish tomorrow

Re: Painting the DRZ

Well I worked into the wee hours last night. Every time that I went to stop, I pulled another piece off until it was completely naked minus the rear. That's going to be a bit of a hassle and I'll need to pedal my butt to work tomorrow if I paint all of it. (debating)

Re: Painting the DRZ

After more research it appears as though no one is using clear coat on there plastics so I'll go without it and see what happens...

On a side note, hopefully it will also bond to the gas tank, lol. I know it won't bond to the clarke tank but that's ok.

Everything is painted, just waiting for it to dry. It takes up to 7 days to get to its hardest but I'll be in the dirt this weekend regardless...nothing crazy though!

These are the pieces: (minus a few that are drying inside)

Here is a close up of the color combo chosen:

This was such a bitch because I have a bunch of wires running back there and I didn't want to have to take everything apart and have to resolder some stuff...just a hassle...well this idea wasn't much better but I got all of it painted:

All the pieces were drying and figured that I couldn't just leave the tank as-is; figured it's coming off anyways so no biggy if it doesn't bond to the metal tank:

Full assembly tomorrow. I attached the front fender along with the fork plastics. Looking ****ing sexy ana

Looks sharp . . . but isn't painting a dirt bike sort of an exercise in futility? Seems like you're almost begging the bike gods to drop an invisible rock in front of you

LOL!
Was thinking the same thing...it looks so good now! After so much hard work, won't you be afraid to ride it in the dirt!!!

Re: Painting the DRZ

Nice job Tommy! I like the new blue better than the original.

Question, can you go through the whole process on what you did to paint the parts? I have some plastics I need to paint and I'm looking for input from as many sources as possible.

Check out ThumperTalk and search for Krylon and it'll give you a bunch of examples, but here is my rendition in short steps:
1. Sand the plastics where any large gouges are, don't worry about the small stuff. I used 280 and 320 sand paper, dry.
2. Get KRYLON FUSHION PAINT made for plastics, it will say MADE FOR PLASTICS on the can
3. Rattle it on like you normally would, small amounts at a time or you'll get running. I screwed up on a few small spots but fixable.

That's pretty much it! It's just like spray painting anything else...
