Dave, there are quite a few nice rides in the Rockies around Ft Collins, and north of Denver in Colorado... Before you go north have lunch in Rustic up Podre Canyon. After doing Yellowstone, head west over to Glacier National Park in Montana. You might even think about running up into Canada thru Calgary , over to Banff Park and then back into the US via Seattle. Nothing much to see in Rock Springs Wyo, and going south will get you lots of sand and sagebrush....and slot machines unless you stay in Utah. Zion, etc. IMHO

Re: Aug/Sep 08 Colorado/Wyoming/Dakota etc

Dave,
There are so many great roads/routes you can take in that area. If it were me with your amount of time, I would head north to the Rapid city area and take in the Black hills area (Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, Custer park, etc.). Then I would go west and see Devils Tower, pick up hwy 14 west in Moorecroft Wy. and take all the way thru Sheridan to 14A that crosses the Sheephorn Mt. range into Cody Wy. From Cody take hwy 120 north to hwy 296 ( Chief Joseph scenic hwy) which ends at Hwy 212 ( Beartooth hwy) go north to the summit. Then I would backtrack, come back down 212 into Yellowstone. Yellowstone is a very large park (see Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, Old Faithful Inn, and Yellowstones Grand Canyon). Then head south thru Teton N.P. into Jackson Wy. Depending on your time you can go any direction from there, anywhwere west of Denver is Great riding. Towards the end of your journey, if you should wind up on the west side of Denver, a ride thru Rocky Mountain N.P.on your return is highly recommended.
I would avoid the interstate when possible and take the 2 lane roads because the scenery is better. This route is a favorite of mine, and IMO is a great ride. This has several elevations over 10k' and great scenery so take a camera. Bring your jacket, you will see snow on top of Beartooth even in August. Watch for Deer, Elk ,Buffalo and other wildlife around dusk.

Ride safe!

Ditto on what Mike said. Those are some great roads.
I would spend a couple days in the Black hills area, so much to see.
You can go from Black Hills to Sheridan with only minimal Interstate tavel.
Although Black Hills to Sheridan is typical "Wind"oming, also not much to see except pronghorns and fields. From Sheridan west is a differnt story.
If possible head north to Glacier NP Before Heading into Yellowstone.
take Hwy 212 to junction of 89 at Mammoth hot springs and take it all the way to East Glacier. Go over Going-to-the-Sun Hwy. then south out of Columbia Falls take Hwy 83 South through Ovando to Helena then take Hwy12/287 through Townsend to Three Forks. From Three Forks head south to West Yellowstone. Then head down through Grand Teton NP.
Long ride but so much to see.

I am going this way to Sturgis at the end of July.

Just a few ideas.

Re: Aug/Sep 08 Colorado/Wyoming/Dakota etc

Thanks for the Wyoming ride tips. My husband and two friends are going to Wyoming in May 2008 and are looking for someplace to ride. They ride a BMW, a Ducati and an FJR.

Any other ride ideas are welcome.
