Partial West Coast Tour

My S.O. and I will be taking the bike from San Jose, CA to Arlington, WA in August. Any recommended routes? We are not in too much of a hurry so I want to stay off the freeways.
Thanks.

Re: Partial West Coast Tour

Try the ride report and trip planning sections and look for entries regarding the north coast and Oregon. Lots of them.

Some very general points of interest:

California:
  • Yeah, the Redwoods. Still good.
  • Coleman Valley Rd. between Occidental and the coast. A goat road that even a pillion will like.
  • The Leggett leg above Bragg to 101.
  • Irish Beach.
  • Mendocino and the point.
  • The coast around Trinidad, Elk meadows
Orygun:
  • Coos Bay, the Dunes
  • Newport Oregon
  • The lighthouse. Forget the name but when you see it you'll know what I mean. Not far south of Newport if I remember.
  • Astoria and the Columbia River Bridge across.
  • Powell's Books, Portland. THE bookstore. Period.
  • Multnomah Falls, about an hour up the river from Portland.
Washington:
  • Mt. St. Helens interpretive park
  • Rainier
  • Ferry from Mukilteo to Whidbey, through Oak Harbor. To Mt. Roosevelt on Anacortes Island for a non-pareil view of the Sound, the San Juan Islands, Mt. Baker, the Cascades.
  • Since you'll be in Arlington, go up to the N. Cascades Nat Park.
  • Eat in Fairhaven Harbor, Bellingham. Sunsets from the neighborhood above Fairhaven are great.
  • Check out Newport, Washington via the Whidbey ferry.
  • Pikes Place Market, Seattle.
Have a good trip

Make sure you stop in Ferndale for lunch - also check out the ancient cemetery there.
