Jason, thanks for the post. No sweat about the link, a lot folks link around and share the fun, so thanks for sharing. Now, bear with us while we read the looong journal. Can't make comments til I've gotten through it, but I'll relish the read. In the meantime, get the last few days down!

Curvy Road Re: Maine to Florida and Back

Thanks for the welcome Gary.. I blame pashnit for all of this ... I need to de typo the thing.. got proof-reading it today during lunch..

I have the last few days already written up, but I need to fill in the few where I ran out of battery power in the laptop.. and pictures... and then the summary.. but it is indeed a labor of love and the sharing is what it is all about. I've been around the Internet for a long time and the quality of folks here and ST.n and triumphrat are above the rest.. so few "challenging" people and so many sharing their passion..

ok.. off to posting..

Jason, I read the whoooole thing (before your latest additions). A very enjoyable read, if just a little front-end heavy. Was good to read how you prepared for the trip. You're right... these write-ups help other riders tremendously. Now I need to pop over and check out the rest of the write-up. Thanks for posting it!

UPDATE - Maine to Florida and Back

Well here it is February. I just ordered a new set of Avons for the bike and Today I posted the next to last chapter of the trip report, the equipment summary... I'm aiming for getting the summary posted next week, and eventually will move the full story to web own webspace. Thanks again for the encouragement provided on Pashnit!

Re: Maine to Florida and Back

Jason, I loved your write up and the pictures and will go back over it before my planned camping trip to northeast in June. I live just a few minutes west of Knoxville, TN and if you ever get back down this way give me a shout. I have a cottage you can stay in and if I'm off work I can take you on some more of the roads in the area that are quite enjoyable. I'm glad you enjoyed the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. The Cherohala is about my favorite stretch of road.

On that corner where "SLO" is painted across the road, I have a story. On a group ride I was on with the East Tennessee Riders 3 of us went down in that corner, myself included. This was before the warning was put there. I had entered the corner at about ...ahem...85MPH, which would have been fine normally, we had been running that pace all the way from Tellico Plains. But on this day it wasn't normal. We had been getting a lot of rain in recent days and although the road was dry all the way from Tellico Plains that corner was wet and slick. After entering the corner leaned well over, a 30 foot section of wet road came into my vision. Knowing that at that lean angle my tires wouldn't hold I tried getting it slowed and stood it up. This resulted in me running off the side just a little but it was enough. I rode it through wet ground till I was down to about 30 MPH but the soft soil washed the front out and down I went. A couple on an R1 went down behind me then an SV650 rider came along and went down also. My damage was limited to a broken clutch lever, but the R1 was going to need some help.

We called Ken Wheeler who owns a shop between Robbinsville and Deals Gap and he came out and trailered the R1 to his shop for repairs to make it ridable. Fortunately all 3 of us were able to ride home, although the SV rider did end up needing surgeory on his knee.

After that, Ken Wheeler went out and painted SLO on the road. While we were waiting for help we noticed quite a few small bike parts along the side of the road, levers, turn signal lenses, and other small parts.

Now you know the story behind the SLO on the road. For me, I learned my lesson, expect the unexpected at all times and always carry a spare clutch lever.

1st.. thanks for the compliment... it was a labor of love... loved doing it, loved writing about it..

Let me know where in the area you are headed and I'll do what I can to guide you... of course whatever you do see, you'll end up mssing stuff you should've seen...

Thanks for the story. I love it when event, people and places come together like his.. transcends each of our own unique experineces..

May I include your text in my addendum/summary?
