Broke down today!!
I now have another thing to add to my list of must carry with me!!
I took the KLR out today to meet my Dad (ssbarbich) at ThrottleWorx and then to ride to Highlands High to watch my neice swim. On the way to the School my shifter felt funny, kinda smushy when I was trying to make sure it was in first. Then I tried to shift into 2nd and I barely got my foot under the shifter. We got to the school and looked to see what the problem could be, and to my dismay, the shifter was breaking at the weld. Needless to say I had to call hubby to come get me because I didn't want to chance trying to ride it home! We got it home and I went to put it in 1st to ride it into the parking spot and plink, there went the shifter!!! Hubby had to weld it back together and now I am good to go. Oh, and my Dad and I both thought about taking one of the shifters off of the his HD, but they are too straight and wouldn't work on the KLR!! It was a good idea though!! ![]() I will be ordering another shifter to carry as a spare!!!

Re: Broke down today!!
A pair of Vice Grips in your tool kit can handle a bunch of emergency repairs...even as a gear shifter replacement.

Re: Broke down today!!
How about a welding kit? Along with the fire extinguisher.
Seriously...quicksteel. Ive heard and seen pics of it being used to cover a hole made by the shifter into the crank case. |

Re: Broke down today!!
Kim JB Weld is always a must for the emergency repair kit. I've seen people put all sorts of things back together with it, that and duct tape and safety wire goes along way

If you must carry duct tape, do it the easy way. Wrap the can of spray chain lube you carry with it. Two seperate areas, wrap about ten times around ought to do it. Shift lever?...buy one with a folding tip. No need to carry a spare. |

Re: Broke down today!!
Boy, I will need to get a trailor to haul behind the DS soon, with all the stuff I'm going to have to carry for emergency repairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
![]() As far as having a shift lever with a folding tip, it doesn't do much good when you are riding on the city streets, shifting like you normally do on any other bike, and the shifter breaks way up at the mounting area!!!!!! I think it was just plain old good cheap metal that it was made out of, that was the problem!!!!!!!! ![]() I love my KLR, but I have heard that stuff like this happens with them, along with other minor problems, that actually can be prevented!! I'm all good with it!!!!
