Re: Pashnit & Cycle World Magazine - 1000 Mile Journey to NorCal

Rob, haven't posted in awhile, but I agree. Most of the $1000 bikes in our area (according to CycleTrader) are old dirt bikes and salvage titles. Put a few miles on the DR since my last post, but too busy enjoying the ride to post pics. It seems to me, Tim is primed for a job like VP of a cycle rag. If he had a rag anything like this forum it would be a smashing success! Look forward to that ride we talked about. Ride safe. Jon.

WOW how Fun!

Don Canet has always been a real skilled/fast rider. In the mid and late 80's a group of us would ride Hiway 1 to Laguna Seca (from the Central Coast) for the races every year. Don had this old junker FJ600 and he would literally ride to wherever we had agreed to stop, turn around come back past us and still beat us back to the stop. He was/is an amazing rider. He would end up riding 3 times the miles the rest of us rode. Sounds like he was doing some of that on this ride

I used to own an old ZX10 with a Ninja 900 motor. It was used by Don in a CW $1000 motorcycle shoot out several years ago. It was rattle can metallic black with Yosh exhaust. It had that ugly whirl (and overheating problem) of the Ninja 900...

Saw the article in Cycle World and started cracking up. After watching the evolution of the BMW and Honda touring bikes in to expensive mammoths over the decades and reading posts on another forum where people ask which liter bike to choose for commuting to junior college, this article just struck me as really funny and appropriate.

I used to own a Honda Ascot. Had lots of fun on that bike on the little back roads. Recognised the gas station in Dinsmore. The roads are just great fun in that area. I did a track day at Laguna Seca and Brian Catterson was there. He hauled around on a big Moto Guzzi, was fun to watch. Good conversationalist at dinner too.

Good job with the write up and the pictures.

Re: Pashnit & Cycle World Magazine - 1000 Mile Journey to NorCal

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I noted one little problem. There is some confusion about the designation of the old RD Yamahas, and it looks like that confusion has raised its ugly head here, too. I'm not sure why it's that way. Maybe someone else has an explanation. And I wouldn't know this, had my first new bike (actually picked out by my wife) been an 1974 Yamaha RD350A.

Yes, 1974. Maroon tank, with a thin white stripe.

This is just a minor point, but there is some confusion about the designation of the Yamaha RD bikes. I wouldn't know this, had my first new bike (picked out by my wife) was a brand new 1974 Yamaha RD350A. The 1973 bike was the RD350. The 1975 bike (last year in the series) was the RD350B. After that, they became the RD400.

The RD350A in the U.S. had a solid maroon tank with a simple white stripe.

Great ride, but the best kit to fix old Yamaha RD's permenantly is a heavy hammer or axe, a can of gas and a box of matches.Nice for wasting Sunday afternoons fixing and riding around the block for 10 min's, but nothing can beat them from screwing up a long enjoyable ride,as the one with your team proved again. Then again, maybe there is ,the Chinese bikes ?
