Trip To Baton Rouge via Natchez Trace

My graduating class celebrated it's 30 year reunion last weekend and I decided that it would be a nice reason to run down the Natchez Trace. I have heard it is a really good ride. I started out of Kingston at 5:30am last Wed hoping to get some good sunrise pictures from the Mount Roosevelt overlook on 70 just out of Rockwood. I wasn't going to be disappointed.

After the overlook I headed down to Dayton and headed west on Hwy 30. The view of the Sequatchie Valley from 30 is fantastic and I have yet to take a picture that does it justice.

I took Hwy 30 to 70S and then Hwy 96. The first thing you see when you get to the Natchez Trace is the bridge over 96. It is very unusual and aesthetically designed.

Everyone that has ridden the Trace has always said that the Loveless Cafe is an excellent place to eat and mandatory for anyone riding the Trace. Not wanting go to jail for not sampling the Loveless' food I had a delicious breakfast, and the mandatory picture.

After breakfast I got a little advice from the waitress. DON'T SPEED, and 50 MPH means 50 MPH. Not 55, not 60. I heeded her advice and settled in for a relaxing ride to Natchez.

After you get a short ways south the road straightens out and really levels out. The draw is not the curves or, in my opinion, the scenery, but the relaxed pace. There is almost no traffic on the Trace. I almost never had another vehicle in front of or behind me. You are alone almost all the time. Granted there is some nice scenery, but it really isn't anything like what we have around here.

On the first day I made it to Tupelo and got myself a room. The next morning started out like this.

Re: Trip To Baton Rouge via Natchez Trace

Once through Natchez I headed down 61 towards St Francisville. Ft Francisville is home to numerous antebellum plantations including the Audubon Plantation. The drives to these old homes are lined with moss covered Live Oaks. They are really beautiful. If you ever get down that way I would recommend visiting the Audubon Plantation. The home is full of Audubon's bird paintings and the grounds are a bird sanctuary.

Re: Trip To Baton Rouge via Natchez Trace

I hit St Francisville at 2:00PM. This would have put me in Baton Rouge just right for 3 o'clock gridlock. I decided a better option would be to take the ferry across the Mississippi River and ride through New Roads and around False River (it's an oxbow lake, one of many along the Mississippi) and on to the levee road into Port Allen.
