Re: Need help in posting google maps and routes??

To post the map image itself in a thread, you have to do a screenshot and insert that as an image. That's what was done in these maps from another thread-

To post a link that will take that will open a copy of the actual Google Map, once you've got your route finalized-

1) Click the link labeled "Link" (upper right corner of the map)

2) Copy the URL from the box labeled "Paste link in email or IM"

3) In the message editor window in Pashnit, type a label for your link, like "Here's a link to my route". Highlight the label text, then click the "Insert Link" button in the editor (center of the toolbar - looks like a globe with a chain link). Paste in the link URL you copied in step 2 and click OK.

The result is a link like this

There's a caveat when inserting route links. When a message is posted in Pashnit, the forum software scans the message searching for road names it recognizes. If it finds a name it knows, it creates a hot link to the matching MotoRoads page. Like this - Cerro Noroeste. The problem is, if the road name is in the middle of the URL for your Google Map link, the link gets mangled. And the MotoRoads link scan doesn't happen until you actually post the message, so everything looks fine in the preview, then you click submit, and pfft, your map link is broken.

The fix is to use a "URL redirector" like TinyURL. As a matter of habit, I always use the following steps when inserting a map-

2a) Go to TinyURL.com
2b) Paste the Google Map link in the box labeled "Enter a long URL to make tiny:"
2c) Click the "Make TinyURL!" button
2d) TinyURL will display the original URL, followed by the "tiny" URL. In my example, this-

Re: Need help in posting google maps and routes??

Jeff...thanks a million for this. I will try this out when I get back later today. Youre very helpful. I know you go to CO often, so I may ask you for some info, like the best passes to see, etc. I know theres a LOT of em, but I plan to see as many as I can in a few days worth of riding. Hey, thanks again.
