Bear Camp - the Road

I wasn't able to make my southern California trip, so, with some vacation time on my hands I'm planni9ng to get in some "local" riding. One of my favorite rides is Bear Camp, from Galice to Gold Beach, OR. With elevations reaching close to 5,000' there won't be too many more chances this year.

We found our attention momentarily diverted by a Model A club that was taking a fall tour. I'll bet there aren't too many of this particular model around

This owner had done a little hot-rodding on his car. Some of it was vintage, but I don't think they had alternators in the 30's...

Then, on to the important matter of the day!

Most of the road was in similar condition

but it was necessary to pay attention

Then, as we approached 4,000'...

and 5,000'. This was the maiden voyage for the Harley. We didn't get it too dirty...

Then, as they say, from there it was all downhill. Views such as this competed with the road for our attention.

There were a couple of short unpaved stretches, but the gravel was well packed

There were brief views of the Rogue River

After lunch in Gold Beach we headed south on US101

Then east on US199 toward home

The temperatures dropped with the sun. We rode at 39 degrees for a while, even though it was only 7:00 p.m.

So much for global warming....

Re: Bear Camp - the Road

It was a nice day, after things thawed out.

McKenzie Pass is on my short list for the same reason: the official lock-the-gate day is November first, but I doubt that the snow will wait that long.

Nice pictures and glad you were able to ride there before the snow. Thanks for sharing the ride.

Re: Bear Camp - the Road

Yes, we'll be shut out of the high(er) roads by Ol' Man Winter in a short time; have to take advantage of the sun while we have it!

Thanks, Donna. That was near one of the spots where we had a short huddle to determine whether to go on or turn back. Nobody wanted to put undue pressure on the other riders. As far as speed, this is one of those short cuts that cuts off miles but takes just as long as the "long" way - but it's more fun and more scenic.

Re: Bear Camp - the Road

We were in Gold Beach in July for a family camping trip to Loon Lake near Reedsport. My wife has relatives in Gold Beach and Brookings and it's always a pleasure to visit the area. Would be more so on the bikes.
