I think I may have misunderstood something...

What does the 401 Kilometres and the 101 Kilometres refer to?

Re: Would an 'English Counties Iron Butt Ride' be fun?

Thanks for the comments Stephen - sorry to have stolen your thunder! I am trying to produce a 'menu' of interesting rides which can be approved by the IBA as something to move on to from the thundering along the motorways for 24 hours - which as someone has already pointed out, cannot be done very far in Britain before you run out of road!

The Counties Ride has to be done as a circular ride (ie same start and finish) visiting and photographing a particular building of historical importance in each of the 40 (rather than 39 for purely aesthetic reasons!) county towns, and collecting receipts from the 6 'corners' of the ride - all within 48 hours of the start. It is not easy, mainly because you spend very little time on any motorway but have lots of winding lanes and town centres to deal with. I could not get to all the buildings I intended to visit so am looking at revising the list or making it more open before releasing the ride on the IBA website. If anyone wants to have a go get in touch

401kilometers Here in the States a 401(k) is a retirement account... You can choose whether to put the money into (usually) stocks, index funds, or bonds. Everyone used to put it into stocks and so everyone lost half their retirement.

Yup, what Daniel said.... had it all lined out to be able to retire in the next 4 years, now I am thinking closer to 8 to 10 years. On the bright side I still have a job, however since it involves the evil oil industry who know what will happen.

So stephen what do you think of doing it as a retro ride on Old Brit Iron.... maybe no bikes allowed if produced after 1967. We have the Great Race here in the states where the old cars and motorcycles rally accross America, no cars or bikes after 1965 need apply.

Complete non-starter.

Which is the main problem that Old Brit Iron has - not starting!

I've owned them, ridden them, spent a small fortune on them and waited an eternity for them to be repaired / maintained.

Old British bikes are simply too unreliable for me to use anything but Japanese or German machinery.

Can you guess that I'm not a fan?

So how about 9 times around the M25 on a Honda Ruckus?

No thunder stealing happened here Robert. After all there's no ownership of routes is there?

I'm just very, very impressed that you did the trip (safely).

Kudos to you.

Stephen,

better think twice, your but might get too tortured to even think about making those nice pictures, as we are used to get them from You !!
If You are planning to take the misses along, so no problem, then she can keep on doing the good job.

Anyway, if You are determined You will do this anyhow.

Thanks for the kind words Pacco

I've changed my bike and have just bought a different saddle which needs a gel pack and re-upholstering.

Perhaps next spring, who knows?
