First ride of the year to Cedar Grove/Kings Canyon Nat Park...

hwy180 to Cedar Grove and road's end opened yesterday after a long snowy winter and needless to say I rode it. It's one of my favorite rides. So many twisties and such beautiful vistas and no crowds. Unfortunately I am still on the hunt for a new camera after my old one disappeared (waiting for the new Canon T1i to hit the stores) and my iphone pictures are sucky but they will have to do.

It was cold at the summit by Grants Grove, about 32 degrees, but the views were worth it as usual. It's been too long.


I was kicking myself for not having a new camera with me as the lighting was amazing and the air was clear.


Looks like there have been a few rock slides over the winter and there are a few patches of new blacktop and one new stone guardrail headed down into the canyon. Overall the road is in good shape. As usual almost no people.


Grizzly Falls was booming and the south fork of the Kings River was raging. Lots of spring run-off.


This is a spot at road's end in cedar grove which to me has to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It's hard to capture with an iphone.


Felt good to ride 180 to the end again. One nice thing about the seasons is it keeps the rides in rotation. Spring and fall are the best times for this road.

I'm really finding out the shortcomings of my little P&S and I, too, am waiting for the T1i to hit the shelves so I can crank up another old addiction (motorcycles & cameras just go together, don't they? )
I plan to wear out a set of tires in that area later on this year ....maybe I'll see ya on the road one day

Judging by your very nice photos taken on a cell phone no less, I can't wait to see what you do with a real camera.

Thanks for doing the beta test ride for the 180 this year. I'm headed up that way on May 12th to hit Kings Canyon - do you think there is any chance that 23S16 would be rideable then?

I've been wanting to ride there again. Thanks for the report. With the recent hot weather, the falls and rivers should be something to see.

Those cell phone pictures show that you have the eye and I bet they'd be spectacular with a good camera.
