gps will not adhere to my planned route - Help!

Okay, I have spent several days and tons of online research and still can't seem to find what I am looking for - can ANYONE help?

I want to create a route on specific roads that we want to go on. Don't want to take the highways. Most GPS systems you put in where you want to go and they calculate the best way to get there, which doesn't use the roads we want to take.

I've gone to google maps and created our route, move the blue line to the roads we want to take and then sent it to the GPS. However, the GPS info that gets transferred is only the ending address.

I tried mapquest but I have to deviate the route they come up with so many times that I run out of "waypoints?" and that won't work.

Is there any thing out there that has software like google maps where you put in the beginning address, the ending address and then you can deviate the route to where you want to go and then send that route to the GPS and the GPS will follow it? I can't seem to find a system that will do that. Any ideas?

I tried in google maps to put an A, B, C, at each stop point in which I had to move the map on google maps. However, when I downloaded it to the GPS it still came up with their own route between A, B, C and did not follow the roads we wanted to take.

I have such a headache now and could really use some help!

Thanks,
Vicki

Which gps are you using?

They operate differently depending on the software, with the less expensive models seeming to have fewer capabilities.

Will this help?
They have quite a few videos on different models.

Re: gps will not adhere to my planned route - Help!

We have the Garmin Nurvi 350. We know that this unit will not support downloads from what I have read - so we were looking to get a unit that will. Unfortunately, each store we go to says there isn't such a thing. That perhaps we need a handheld gps that hikers use - but even that they don't seem sure it will work for what we want it to do.

I'm trying to get out of having printed maps and it seems that there should be something out there that can do this for us - we can't be the only ones who want to take certain roads that are not Highways that a gps will follow....

Are you telling me that not one motorcycle rider has been able to plot their route on the specific roads they want to take and wanted to download it to a gps? I am soooo confused.....

My Boss can do exactly what you are trying to do on his Garmin 276C..... He plans trips through the NV desert on his dirtbike that way.

can you verify - as from what I've read, the gps will still only find it's specific way between locations.

Yes, our Nuvi 350 can do off road, but we don't want off road on a Goldwing. Let's say we want to go from Ventura to Santa Barbara. The Garmin puts us on the 101 all the way. But, we want to take Foothill to Ventura Avenue to the 150 around Lake Casitas to 192 thru Summerland over to the 144 and then down to Castillo and Shorline Road. We cannot create that route in our Garmin and I can move the roads on Google Maps very easy, but as I said it won't transfer the whole route with the roads I've mentioned - it will still route us on the 101.

I have a Lowrance H2O hand held GPS. With that and a map I always know just where I am. Kind of.

Any of the Garmin units that have the "Route Planning feature will do it. Here's the 3 least expensive. Both the Zumo 550 & 660 will do it also. Here's a quick tutorial on how it's done with Garmins software "Map Source" which I believe comes with any unit that does "route planning" It definitely comes with any Zumo.
