'Ride With GPS' Mapping Website

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I recently found this cool mapping website called Ride With GPS. With it you can preplan your route and load it to your gps. It also shows you an elevation profile and gives you the total elevation gain and maximum grade. Best part…it's free.

Check out this map I made from a ride report from Mike (EQPlayer).

Re: 'Ride With GPS' Mapping Website

hey, can anyone help me out how to get it to the gps? I created a route and exported the .gpx to the garmin while the garmin was connected to the computer. I put the file in the gpx file folder under garmin, but I can't find the route on the garmin. It won't import under "my data" because you do that when you use mapsource the ridewithgps is not mapsource. I have the garmin 760 and this worked great to create a route - I just can't find it on the garmin.

any ideas????

Re: 'Ride With GPS' Mapping Website

You may have to drop & drag it to your card or import thru the data wire

Try saving in a diff format. I just played with it briefly. Haven't tried to import it yet.

Which GPS do you have? If it' ZUMO maybe check on ZumoForum. If anyone else has info please post.

This site for maps is way easier than the old google! I do like it even tho I usually use map source but this is an easy way to share with others that don't have that. Never have gotten the hang of the Google maps.

Nice -- I am shopping for a new GPS for use on the bike and car. Looking at the Zumo 550 and 660 and am getting analysis paralysis. I hope this type of planning and sharing ability will work across different devices. Cool products abound, thanks for sharing -- I'll keep edumicating myself and get something soon.

Shrug Re: 'Ride With GPS' Mapping Website

Fishwitch - I did have the garmin connected to the computer via a data wire. On the computer I dragged and dropped the route from the ridewithgps that I created into the gpx file on the garmin folder on the computer. It is there. You cannot run the garmin while it is plugged into the computer as that is charging mode also as well as downloading mode. I unhooked the garmin, turned it on and can't find the route. As I said, I tried favorites and nothing. I tried "my data" and "import route" but it doesn't work because on the garmin 760 that "my data" and "import route" is for use with mapsource. I still am stumped....

Vicki,

Run Mapsource on your PC.
File/Open open your saved .gpx file.
Then connect your Garmin device using the data cable to the USB port on your PC.
In Mapsource, select upload to device.
Done.

On your Garmin, it will be listed as a saved track.

Re: 'Ride With GPS' Mapping Website

Barry, I did exactly as you said, however, I don't have "tracks" on my garmin 760. When I uploaded it on mapsource, what uploaded were "tracks" not route or waypoints and it doesn't show the "cue" area from the ridewithgps route I created. When I sent to the gps the only thing that transfered was the "TRACK". What I can't figure out is how to find "tracks" on my garmin. I have routes to chose from or favorites. It is not there.

When I have made a mapsource route I have to click on "my data" and then click on "import route from file" on my garmin to get the mapsource route, but nothing imports on this ridewithgps route. This is where I am stuck - any advise?

I use a Garmin 76CS, so I am not familiar with the 760.
In my Mapsource, I open the .gpx file, not import it. I can then click on the tabs for maps, routes, tracks or waypoints and by right clicking on them, "show on map".
When I upload to device, it provides check boxes for Maps, routes, waypoints, or tracks.

What version of Mapsource do you have? You can upload the latest upgrade from the Garmin website.

The best place to ask is in the GPS section of ADVRider.com
