Re: California Folks, which gloves do you wear around 25-40F?
Gert, the problem with some gloves is they don't keep your hands warm in cold weather if they are too tight. You need breathing space for your fingers. If you use your liners, are the gloves tight?
Secondly, there is the wind factor. If your gloves aren't behind a fairing and are more out in the wind (like on most sportbikes such as your R6) the wind-chilll factor at 45F and 70 mph is more like 18F (!). No wonder your pinkies are cold! Short of getting heated gloves and wiring your bike for it, try some winter grade riding gloves. I've found them to be a lot like ski gloves. More puffy and roomy for the fingers. Use a thin merlino pair of liners in them nonetheless to battle the wind-chill factor. Make sure the glove also has a long gauntlet (wrist coverage area). Good winter gauntlets are invaluable in keeping wind from scooting up your sleeves and making you even colder. Hope this helps.

thx,
ah damn, I forgot the windchill factor and yes they are a bit tight with the liner, but it's even colder without the liner. Heated gloves are a bit to expensive right now. I try to get to sacramento's cyclegear and get some winter gloves. I'm so tempted to just use my snowboarding gloves.. But the idea of this thread is to see what people are using, so I can buy the product most people use :P |

I'm good with heated grips and the BMW winter gloves down to about freezing. I don't ride below freezing temps which doesn't happen here very much anyways. Too risky with ice on the road.

Gloves alone can't do it. You need heated grips or gloves to replace the BTUs being sucked out of your pinkies.
Consider this: unless your ride's parked in a very well-heated garage, the bars/grips will be will be @ whatever level of frigidity the day has for you. The breeze from riding, even if you've got some sort of windbreaker, will contribute to the heat loss....and the bars are still cold. ![]() No matter what you're wearing, even the best gloves only delay popsicle fingers for a little while. ![]() Ditto for snowboarding gloves, and in addition...they're not made to protect your paws from asphalt. Hot Grips (not the near-worthless thin film-wraps) are ~ $60.00 on Ebay, and you really do need to think of your bike at Christmas.

Good gloves and heated grips are terrific, but what an amazing difference a jacket liner or even an electric vest makes!
(Warming your torso definitely translates to warmer extremities, too...)

I've had my new gerbings set up on the bike for the past two weeks. Yesterday and today (pre-dawn commute on the 2 coldest morning so far) I used the gloves and I had some toasty warm hands...wow. Cant wait to use 'em on some of our winter rides this year. Havent tried them in conjunction with the heated jacket yet but I'm expecting good things.

I have a pair of alpine stars that are marketed to the snowmobile crowd-cant remember the model name of them though.
they work great down to 40 degrees ambient while riding.hands get chilled some but not uncomfortable or frozen.

Re: California Folks, which gloves do you wear around 25-40F?
I have the Scorpion Recon winter gloves and have spent a fair share of time in sub 40 and even a bit in sub 30 and have been happy. They came with liners but I don't use them (never needed them).
Even happier now that the new bike has hand guards (keeps the air off your knuckles). Different people have different tolerance levels though. I run warm-blooded and I rarely feel "cold" here in Cali.

Re: California Folks, which gloves do you wear around 25-40F?
Anyone use those mitten-like covers that go over the whole bar end, Hippo Hands?
from the Hippo Hands page: http://www.hippohands.com/?gclid=CPL...FSWlagodllz5qQ I've been thinking of getting some, because I don't have hand guards. And even with hand guards, it seems like the cold air would come around anyway. I have heated grips, but my fingertips are popsicles almost immediately if the temps are below about 40. |
