Re: Just witnessed catastrophic Helmet Failure during bike accident!

TR - yep, and if you include the faceshield area and mount points, it goes to over 45%.

I'm pretty much sold on full face or no riding. Put this in the ATGATT category for me.

Re: Just witnessed catastrophic Helmet Failure during bike accident!

Robert I hope the rider makes a full recovery. Just bought a new lid at the bike show and never gave a thought to anything but a full face. A full face saved my butt a few years ago when I introduced my bike to a ditch while making my way home from a long trip. My wife rides with a flip lid for the same reason many do as it does offer many a perk as already mentioned by some. I'll have to mention this when she makes her next purchase. Thanks for sharing the story, it helps us all think a little more...Rick.

Life is full of risks, and it is certainly conceivable that any of us could be involved in an incident which would not be survivable even with the best full-face helmet. For me, the convenience of the flip-up feature is a reasonable trade-off for a somewhat diminished level of personal protection. YMMV.

I do hope and pray the rider involved in the crash fully recovers.

I totally agree. There's no such thing as absolute safety, and a flip helmet is, at least for me an acceptable compromise between convenience and safety on the road. My next helmet ( I change them every 2 or 3 years ) will be a flip again.

My prayers go out to the crashed rider.

Well, I have resigned myself that my next helmet will be a fullface. I particularly like this one. Yes, its expensive. But, I like the good vibes and Vibrancy of this helmet. Guarranted to stand out. If its good enough for the Doctor. Its good enough for me. Revzilla has the best prices. If you hadnt looked at my avatar. I kinda have a thing for brightly colored helmets. Its as much of a safety thing as well as an artsy fartsy thing with me.

Make mine a 4 X 4 please!

Another twist (literally) I have heard of is the helmet catching and twisting your neck. Any one got good 411 on that one?

BTW almost two years have gone by since the cager knocked me to the ground. My bucket after. A 3/4 or flip up would have done me fine but I still will stay with the full face non-flip type.

I think that most situations that result in a helmet snagging on something, and then twisting your neck, would be a lot messier w/o a skid-lid on the snagged noggin.

No doubt messier and higher percentage of drain bamage or dead. Nothing is going to convince me to ride sans the best head protection I can afford anyway and that is a full face non flip up (plus I have never found a flip up that fits anyway). Excrement occurrs in all crashes and we takes our chances.

Hopefully he recovers from his injuries. From the sounds of it, he probably would have been dead already without the helmet.

I too have switched from flip-ups to full face. I also find the fit much better. Used to get headaches from the flip-up, which is what prompted me to look at full-face. That fixed the problem for me.

Re: Just witnessed catastrophic Helmet Failure during bike accident!

I read a report on the modular helmets being dangerous due to where the front is hinged. They said it is close to the temple area of the skull which is a weak point. The article mentioned that there is less padding in the area where the modular is hinged and many people have suffered severe head injuries and skull fractures in the temple area when wearing a modular during a crash.

Full Face only for me!

Re: Just witnessed catastrophic Helmet Failure during bike accident!

I saw a friend of mind tonight who is a neuro emergency room nurse at UCLA. She said that guy hasn't been through their ER, which doesn't mean he's not there, if he didn't sustain any neurological injuries.

She also said that even though he probably got some serious injuries, just from the description of the impact and slide she doesn't think it was necessarily fatal.

I do wish we knew who this person is, and had some kind of update on his condition.
I posted a reference to this thread on socalsvriders thinking surely someone over there would no him, but so far not a peep.

Prayers for a speedy recovery to whoever he is.
