Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
I've come up with a preliminary Iron Butt Itinerary
Southern Route --- Fresno to Goshen, Goshen to Coalinga, Coalinga to Barstow, Barstow to Blythe then reverse total mileage according to Free Trip Planner ==== 1,064 miles Norther Route Fresno to Grants Pass then back -- total mileage according to Free Trip Planner -- 1,016 Still looking for an extra 500 miles -- if all goes well in the SS1000 to make it a SS1500 |

Re: Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
Might want to add an extra 40 miles or so to the northern route for a fudge factor if the ride is to be IBA certified. Wouldn't to hear "Sorry Rod but according to our mapping, you only rode 998 miles and that doesn't qualify."
Its happened. Dale (out the door for some twisty stuff)

Re: Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
How about Fresno to the Petrified Forest in AZ? Come back through Vegas. You have to add in a small detour to get over 1,500 miles (in this scenario, north of Flagstaff on the return trip).
Kingman, AZ would be the key point. If you head on to the Petrified Forest, you are on a 1,500 mile run, with the 1,000 mile point right at Kingman when you come back through, westbound, and the remaining 500 miles from Kingman abck home, through Vegas. If you want to cut short and just go for the SS1000, you hit Kingman eastbound and turn north to Las Vegas, then head back home. That's a 957 mile route, but if you file a contingent plan for this, and add in 50 more miles, that's an SS1000. Does the IBA allow for filing alternate plans? |

SS 1000 and 1500 do not require advance filing. Just double check your stops and get receipts, log everything, miles time etc. At about 500 miles it's easy to start forgetting to do things, so stay on top of the log.

Re: Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
thats another possibility, I am concerned about I-15 to Vegas as it can be heavily patrolled at certain times of the day and I think the speed limit there is 65 --

Re: Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
I would avoid the 15 between Baker and Vegas. To much traffic and to many LEOs. Also looks like you are crossing over Hoover Dam. That is a parking lot since 911. High security and still lots of tourist. you could lose 1 1/2 hours just getting through there.
You can catch some back roads out of Baker through the Mojave National Preserve. Good road and no LEOs. Good place to make up time and miles. I'd like to run a portion of this with you if you don't mind some more company? What's the date for the ride? Dale

Re: Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
Thanks for the tip, Dale. Here's a new map with both ideas incorporated. 1515 RT miles from Fresno.

Re: Iron Butt Itinerary --Oct 1
could be a little slow through Bullhead and Laughlin -- Been over that road serveral times and don't remember the speed limit -- and it actually goes as a surface street through Bullhead and Laughlin
Just need to make sure of the gas stops -- so far it all looks good -- but I will need gas at about 120 to 140 if I am getting 40 mpg on the ride -- |
