travel time across Highway 36

I want to ride 36 come spring/summer and it's gonna have to be a day trip sorta thing. Looking at google maps it's 2 hours, 44 minutes, but acording to tim's write up here http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway36.htm he states " It's only 139 miles long but estimated at a 4 hour ride. I suppose that depends on your pace of course. "

What is a real world expectation of time needed to do it? I'd be leaving from Newark, so the trip there or back will be on 5. Might be easy to slab the straight section on the way home, but that would mean riding 36 West to East. Any preferences??

You are talking Red Bluff to Fortuna part of 36 only I am assuming. Tim is correct, figure 3.5 to 4 hours realistically. It can be done faster if you are really going to push it. I suggest you don't push to your max since you do still have to be cognizant of gravel, dirt, traffic and such. Enjoy it, it is a great ride.

Yes, the good part

Sounds like a good plan to figure 4 hours. Just wanted a realistic time frame to figure into the total travel time.

It'll be four hours, or more, as we guarantee you'll be stopping to grab a lot of pictures.

When you get to the 'Y', take Highway 3 north and ride over Hayfork Pass, wipe the silly grin off your face, and then take Wildwood Road south to reconnect to 36, or come back the same way for the rest of your ride.

East to west or west to east; the ride's different depending on your direction, but I like them both.

Other considerations are trying to avoid too much time staring into the sun, and the deer are really thick when the sun is flirting with the hoizon.

It is going to take a little planning I guess. If I take 101 north and catch 36 there, the sun will most likely be overhead and to my back on 36. Then coming home on 5 it will be a straight forward, low exertion trip home. Might be the way to go
