I remember dozens or hundreds of the tarantulas on the road, in more than one location.
Last October, on Caliente/Bodfish I did see one lone tarantula, crossing the road. All alone, just one.
I know why he was crossing the road.

Great pic Mark! Is this Judy's new henchman to keep an eye (or 8) on you when she's at work?

Mount Diablo is another location for the mass Lookin'-for-a-lover migration. Also, I somehow always ended up being the Taratula herder when ever they showed up on our firing ranges or bivouac areas... The "other" voted solution involved the butt end of a machine gun! Meanies!

Spiders are simply cool. I love the big garden orb weavers - those do get as big as a quarter or half dollar! Go out in the morning and see the dew on the web. Priceless.

I let the cellar spiders hang out and they keep the other bugs down in the house.

Judy is not as charitaable toward spiders as a general rule...she will observe the jumpers if they are in their place. NOT in our home, that is. One of these very spiders bit her finger when she put on a glove once. She said it hurt and then got numb.

The link in post #10 is to Bob the spider hunter. His Youtube series is very fun to watch, including the large web spiders. He even has a series on some jumping spiders from mating to hatch...worth a look.

Spiders?... all three of my kids were Jungle Cruise Skippers at Disneyland (youngest is still there). They all told stories of their first run in the morning and coming back to the dock with wolf spiders on thier backs.

I actually felt sad to find that the spider I have been observing outside the window of my office for 6 months and built a spectacular web, watched it grab flying insects as they came close is now gone, I guess it lived its life span.

Usually have a few big orb weavers in the yard this time of year. As long as they're not in my way they are left alone to catch all those annoying flying insects. Had one on the porch last year, and I'd sometimes sit out there in the evening watching as he built his web. Very meticulous, and precise. They are harmless to us humans.
