More snow pics

OK, this is a pretty local loop. But the pics are on my hard drive, it's raining, and I'm waiting for laundry to dry, so here it is.

If you make a triangle between Hwy 80, Hwy 20, and Hwy 49 between Auburn and Nevada City there is some interesting forest territory with remains of hydraulic mining that I've been waiting to explore. Last Sat. it had been dry for a while so I figured the roads would be accessible. The two southern entries are from Secret Town and Dutch Flat along 80, so I decided to go north by Foresthill and Yankee Jim's road which dumps out near Colfax.

Confluence of North and Middle fork, flow pretty mild

The turnoff to Shirttail Canyon road, really pretty road along a river up a canyon, leads to Iowa Hill

I didn't take any pics of the bridge, this one is from a couple of years ago

Re: More snow pics

At gold run, from the old Hwy 40 you can look north and see more hydraulic mining. There is an interesting convoluted surface texture under the trees and brush the camera didn't quite pick up

You could see where they stopped because they were encroaching on the highway, just 30 feet to the right

Went to Iron Point, on the south side of 80 to get the famous view of Giant Gap

View in opposide direction. I think the snowy ridge is along the Soda Springs road between Robinson's Flat and Soda Springs

Re: More snow pics

Upon venturing off the asphalt from Dutch Flat I quickly realised the dirt riding in the area was going to have to wait until later in the spring or early summer. Road was really wet and sloppy under the snow and my nearly bald rear tire wasn't helping matters.

So I decided sort of last minute to loop highway 20 back down to the Grass Valley area and see if there was any access from the north side. At the top of 20 where it joins 80

There wasn't really any sand on the road and no threat of ice so I decided to keep going up 80 and then turn off on 40 to see the soda springs area. I missed a ton of great shots of the ski areas but I stopped at the train tunnel by Donner Pass. Won't be riding through anytime soon.

At Donner Pass looking down at the arched bridge. You can see how little snow there was at Donner Lake, as of a week ago

Same vantage point but looking to the south. The ski areas along 40 were not lacking for snow and there was a pretty good crowd

Re: More snow pics

Going down 89 from Truckee and along the west shore wasn't too much fun because I kept getting stuck in collumns of slow traffic. You know traffic is slow when an old guy on a KLR feels held up. Didn't stop for a pic again until Emerald bay. This is with my back to the bay, looking uphill. Enough time has passed between each storm that there has been a fair amount of melt off, keeping the accumulation pretty thin.

I was tired and the bike was due for an oil change so I headed home after a cup of coffee at south shore. Sunset shot at Alder Creek tract bridge, again. Looks like not much of a chance of riding this weekend but I guess we need the rain and I'm pretty sated from all of the unexpected mid winter riding opportunities this year anyhow.

Re: More snow pics

This morning at 1600 feet but it's warm and wet snow and already melting off. April and May can be wet months but not too cold so hopefully the high pass openings won't be held off as late as last year.

Re: More snow pics

Great pics. I am really hoping we don't get a winter blast in March and April. We had snow in Eugene yesterday...
