ACH conditions?
I'm planning on riding ACH early next week.
 I've checked the CalTrans site and it says the road is open, but I'm wondering how it is to ride this time of year.The plan is to ride West - East (L.A. to Pinecrest). It seems the road west of Newcombs Ranch Inn is in good shape, what about east? The forecast is for precip in the L.A. area before I arrive - what's the chance of snow? Thanks for any info. Robert

I rode ACH from the 210 to Wrightwood Thrusday. The road is open but above Newcomb's Ranch gets pretty dirty and wet. My history on the road has been that the first ice really shows up right around the 5000' level, which is about 8 miles short of Newcomb's, but is still pretty passable in late morning to around 2pm - after than the sun starts getting below the ridge line and the temperature in the shade drops rapidly.
If it does rain this weekend/Monday however, all bets are off. jdg

Thanks for the info. I'll have to start looking for my donkey toque (that's what we call them in the Great White North)!
I guess I'll be planning on riding around. Little/Big Tujunga here I come! Robert

Check with CalTrans & the weather.
Weather is very unsettled right now. Tonight's news showed snow over The Grapevine & talked to a friend in Tehachapi that said is was screaming chyt sideways all day. Curtailed my plans for my road trip. The good news is sounds like this weekend is supposed to be nice, but be on the look out leftover ice, snow & debri. |
