Northern Arizona to Crescent City, California.
In July of this year the wife and I are taking our 2001 Yamaha Road Star 1600 and we will be going to Crescent City, California from Northern Arizona. Been on some different mileage charts and also my GPS. We want to go up through Nevada to Susanville, California then over Willow Creek, California. We will then go up to Crescent City and start our trip down the coast. We did a trip last October and we went from Arizona to San Diego, California. Went up the coast as far as Morro Bay. Any info or trip plan that anyone has would be helpful. We have no set itinerary as we like to just do what we please each day.

www.destinationhighways.com N.California, has great maps etc of the N.Sierras. You can ride to the I5 and back to 101 on great twisty roads.

Re: Northern Arizona to Crescent City, California.
Nevada in July.....much like Ariz. You might want to think about cool vests and cool snakes for around your neck. Just no where to get out of it.
I'd suggest taking Hwy. 89 north from Markleville, up to Chester, Ca. It's a much cooler and much more beautiful ride than that part of Hwy 395. Then Susanville is just a few miles from Chester. |

What are you after? Scenery? Twisties? Points of interest? Shortest time/distance?

Re: Northern Arizona to Crescent City, California.
Not sure what I'm after. Some folks say don't go through Nevada that it's like riding on the moon. Others say it's a nice ride, but will be hot in July. Just looking for the most scenic route that doesn't always have to be on interstates. Twistys don't bother us one bit. Want to get to Crescent City and then just take our time and see things all the way down to San Diego. Thank you for your replies.

You were wanting to stop in Willow Creek I believe. So from Chester continue on 89 north over the top of Mt. Lassen (more incredable ride and scenery!) to Hwy. 44 west towards Redding. In Redding take Hwy. 299 west to Willow Creek and on over to Hwy. 1 and 101. By the way, you live in Ariz..........I don't think Nev. is going to do anything for you. JMHO |

Re: Northern Arizona to Crescent City, California.
I would suggest cutting thru Tahoe, but not up Kingsbury Grade.
Instead, consider turning west from 395 at Monitor Pass, just before Topaz Lake. This will get you off 395 sooner, and into the high country (Monitor Pass 8K' +) Go thru Markleville, taking hwy 89 into Myers/South Lake Tahoe. Follow Hwy 89 north, stop for lunch @ West Shore Cafe in Tahoma (internet search them). Excellent food, lunch is about $20 p/head & the view from the pier seating is awesome. I lived in South Lake for 15 yrs, and this is my favorite restaurant in the whole basin, North or South. Then follow Hwy 89 up. I would stay in the mtns as long as possible before crossing the valley, as it can get quite warm. |

Re: Northern Arizona to Crescent City, California.
Hi, taking 89 north and veer into Klamath Falls, Ore is doable, then head west I would stay in the mtns as well and stay off the slab. Two up is perfect for this area! These are some of the best roads!! Enjoy!, Black Bear diners are usually good food thru here.
