Time for a New Bike...But

With some recent changes in life, its time to move. Once that is complete I will be traveling roughly 70 each way to work. While the routes can be fun, and vary daily. Its now time to decide if the ol Daytona (2002 Triumph Daytona 955i) gets modified to meet sporttouring requirements, or spend the cash for a new bike. And the back to the ago old question which bike. Your thoughts?

You see this?

Great commute bike. Light, easy in traffic, good gas mileage ... if I had the cash to spare, I would grab it for myself.

Thinking I may have found my new bike. The 2012 Concours 1400. Looks to have all the capability that I would need. Does anyone have this bike? Any issues with shft drive. With the shaft drive, does this bike overly abuse rear tires.

Re: Time for a New Bike...But

I have had two of c14s since it came out put 20k plus on each before selling. Never had any issues. I am not a abuser and neither am a hard rider. The bike has more power than I am capable of using. after 6k rpm it turns into a beast. Mostly used it for long distance and commuting, weekends in the hills. Took it lots of goaty roads, group rides and long multi day trips. Extremely stable and very very fast and responsive so whether you ride it like a sport bike or a tourer doesn't matter you will equally enjoy. Never had any issues with the shaft drive or extra wear on the tires. whether single or two up ( i am a big guy so two up is heavy ) the bike rides great with tons of power and same response.
excellent brakes as well. I could appreciate the difference whenever I rode my ninja 650. Iam a big fan of the C14 and planning to buy again waiting on the outcome of a job decision.
good luck and enjoy the ride..

For commuting

Great bike for sport touring, but not exactly commuting material. And yes, big heavy bike with lots of power means lots of tires.

I'd snap up that BMW for sale someone posted above and commute on that.

That is one of my concerns, but considering the main route will be the I-15 for 70 miles, has caused my intrest. My other pick would be the 2012 Triumph Tiger 1050. The added bell/whistles for just a small price increase have caused the lean toward the Concours 14.

Add $300 for an Adaptiv Radar detector if you feel you need a liter sport touring vehicle for a commute on I-15.

I've had a chance to talk to (4?) local police motors ... and they tell me that these new C-14s are fantastic bikes, (San Ramon, Danville, San Jose). they are simply lovin the new ride.

I have not had the chance to check out the C-14 CHP version yet ... but plan to do so.

Re: Time for a New Bike...But

I have test rode the Tiger and was impressed with it's ride. I did not go with that bike because I felt it was too exposed for winter commute rides. I have commuted on a bike, all over the Bay Area, as well as into S.F. (45 minute ride each way) for many years. The winter can really get cold ... love how it's ride feels.

Many of my rider friends who rode the older C10 Concours (and commuted to work) went to the FJR1300. They reported that (stock version) is very hard on the front tire. All, mod upgraded it's suspension, and have not looked back since. It is a very nice bike. Power, protection, ride, dependability. Nice sport tourer.

My brother in-law commutes to work (lives in PA) on a Triumph Sprint. He likes this bike because of the motor and it really provides him with sporty rides but still works for him (some protection) on the commute ride.
