Seattle to Astoria
I seem to have lost my original post but I am now the best way through what has been the biggest and most rewarding ride of my life from a challenge and from a scenery perspective.
Flew into San Francisco from Australia on the 22nd of May. Rode Yosemite in the snow on Memorial Day Saturday, then Vegas, Zion, Bryce, Million Dollar Highway, Yellowstone, Beartooth, into Canada and then the Icefileds Parkway. I'm sure I have missed a number of treats out of that summary but your probably getting the picture. I will finish back in SF on the 18th. I am writing this from Vancouver and am heading down to Seattle tomorrow. I am thinking of taking the ferry from Seattle over to Olympic Island and riding the 101 around the island anti clockwise to end the day in Astoria. It will be a big day but was looking for some feedback as to the value of doing it, I have had lots of comments encouraging me to ride the 101 down to highway 1 but didn't want to spend a day doing Olympic Island if I've got that bit wrong. As usual, your feedback will be much appreciated. Andrew |

(especially the morning and afternoon commute times )Take the ferry to the Olympic Peninsula from above Seattle, perhaps after doing Chuckanut Drive (Hwy 11) to Deception Pass to Port Townsend/Port Angeles. Then take the 101 west/south to Astoria. Have FUN !!

Re: Seattle to Astoria
www.destinationhighways.com Washington, map only. I ride in Washington every year and sometimes on weekends. I'm riding Mnt Rainier and St Helens in July with a group of Bird riders. Windy Ridge is not completely closed, I don't think, just the last part, I'm told. I avoid #5, as much as possible. Better still, stay and ride in BC. You could ride up to #20 and then ride East to #97 then South. Many, many options for riding in Wash State. It's a quick ferry ride to Port Townsand, then stay on 101 to Port Angeles, then 112 all the way to Neah Bay. Ride up Hurrican Ridge. East, West, it's all good in Washington. imho Last Sept I rode the perimiter or Olympic Pen to Astoria and all the way to N Calif to ride the N Sierras. Hope you rode yesterday b/c it's rainy for a few days now, including Wash. Good Luck. Did you ride the Sea to Sky at least to Whistler? Better still to Pemberton?

Re: Seattle to Astoria
Do yourself a big favor and hop on a ferry at Anacortes and go over to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Ride around to the backside of the island to Roche Harbor and have a Bloody Mary at the Roche Harbor Resort - its a meal!....
Enjoy the town of Friday Harbor for a couple hour and then take the ferry back to Port Angeles and continue your ride down Hwy 101 to Astoria.... you'll enjoy it! The ferry rides for bikes are great because you are first on... first off!....
